Defense of Nazis Costing ACLU in Terms of Membership

CHICAGO — Because of
their defense of • a Nazi
group, the American Civil
Liberties Union reports it
has lost more than 2,000
members.
According to Douglas E.

Kneeland in the New York
Times, ACLU leaders said
that every new appeal to a
higher court on behalf of
the National Socialist Party
of America's intention to
march throughout the pre-
dominantly Jewish suburb
of Skokie appears to lead to
another surge of resigna-
tions.

Nazi Party leader, to hold a
rally in New York City.

Neier said his organiza-
tion has received more than
4,000 letters protesting the
Illinois chapter's representa-
tion of Frank Collin and his
Nazi group.
David M. Hamlin, Illinois
ACLU executive director,
and David Goldberger,
legal director and the princi-
pal attorney in the Nazi
case, Raid they have found
themselves personal as well
as institutional targets of
abuse because of their
group's involvement in the
Nazi defense.
Goldberger, a Jew, says
that as a result of his in-
volvement in the case,.
friends and family mem-
bers have turned on him,
and some people have
stopped speaking to him.
Admitting the Nazis "are
not basically decent human
beings," Goldberger is de-
termined to defend the Nazi
group. "They have rights,"
he said. "They have the
First Amendment! I. take
great pride in defending
this issue. I am not going to
be deterred from defending

a client's right to speak just
because I disagree with his
speech."

Hamilin and Goldberger
report however, that there
is no pressure from within
the ACLU itself to back off
the case because of bad pub-
licity.

"We could not be more
wholeheartedly in support
of what they are doing,"
Neier said in confirmation.
"They are doing the right
thing. We are unhappy that
a couple thousand ACLU
members say they are re-
signing because we are de-
fending the free speech of
Nazis."
Neier, himself a refugee
from Nazi Germany has
sent out letters to national
membership strongly de-
fending the ACLU's action.
Both Neier and Hamlin
have expressed concern
over the numbers of ACLU
members who have not
bothered to write or resign,
but who may simply not
renew their memberships.
Both project further losses
of membership and a result-
ing strain on the ACLU
budget.

Delta Air Lines extends best wishes to our Jewish friends
for the holiday season and for the year to come. May the new
year bring peace, health, happiness and prosperity for everyone.

Agudat Ahim was an
assimilationist organiza-
tion formed in Austrian-
administered Galicia in
1880. The members of
Agudat Ahim were moti-
vated by feelings of Polish
patriotism and desired to
assimilate into Polish so-
cial and cultural life. The
organization was active
in the political and jour-
nalistic spheres and also
among Jewish youth in
schools and universities.
By 1884 however, the
hopes that Jews would be
accepted in Polish na-
tional life were shaken by
an increase in anti-
Semitism among Poles
and reports of pogroms in.
