Therefore, the reproduc- tion of several of his no- table works in the section of the book entitled "The Zi: onist" offers a great contri- bution to the study of the labors for the rebirth of Jewish statehood. His argu- ments of four decades ago, those of pre-statehood and thereafter, are as appli- cable today as they were when first uttered. The excerpts of Samuel's writings on Zionism cover every aspect of Jewish aspi- rations, the eminent au- thor's evaluations of Jewish experiences during his many visits in Palestine, the fascination of Jerusa- lem, as well as the aspects relating to the Arabs in Is- rael. Samuel had much to say about Diaspora Jewry. and his comments on "Jews Among the Nations" are im- mensely valuable for an un- derstanding of the conflicts that have been marked by anti-Semitism as well as the struggles for emancipa- tion, for just rights, for the dignity and courage with which the identified Jew has faced the enemy and often found a friend. He was a great inter- preter of the role of Yiddish and the leading writers in that language. His "World of Sholem Aleichem" was a best seller for many years and it intrigued his pub- lisher, Alfred Knopf. He was a master delineator of Y. L. Peretz. Furthermore, his essays on Yiddish stand out among the most interpretive. That is why the in- clusion of Samuel's "The Professor and the Fossil" is of noteworthy importance. Samuel discussed literary values and the works of eminent writers .and his "Proust's Jewishness" is an impressive evaluation of Marcel Proust, his back- ground, his writings. Dr. Hindus, the noted scholar who edited this great work, pays tribute to Samuel, decl- aring, "The Worlds of Mau- rice Samuel" gives both old and new readers some in- dication of precisely how unique a phenomenon Sam- uel was among Jewish writers of our time. We are not likely soon, in America, to see his like again." A preface to the Samuel book by Cynthia Ozick, who has emerged among the most brilliant of the new Jewish short story wirters, adds immensely to an ap- preciation of Samuel and his writings. Miss Ozick de- scribes Samuel as an "es- sayist, novelist, activist, Maurice Samuel was so thinker, historian, polemic- closely identified with Jew- ist." U.S. government and Con- gressional sources say that prosecution of the company was unlikely inasmuch as its actions took place when U.S. legal restraints were not in effect as they are at present under legislation adopted three months ago. Three major Jewish or- ganizations have called on Secretary of Commerce Juanita Kreps to enforce the new federal anti-boycott — law strictly and to plug po- tential loopholes in the measure. The American Jewish Committee, American Jew- ish Congress, and Anti-De- famation League of Br Brith submitted recommt dations to the Commerce Department in a 149-page analysis of the Export Ad- ministration Amendments of 1977, which were passed by Congress and signed by President Carter in June. The Department is now drafting regulations to im- plement the law. Meanwhile, a public hear- ing will be held Wednesday on a bill before the New York City Council to bar the city from doing busi- ness with firms which com- ply with the Arab boycott.
