THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday September 2, 1977 23 The ISRAELI ENSEMBLE Shofar Blowing and Cemetery Visit are Among Rosh Hashana Preparations By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.) is customary to visit the cemetery during the month before Rosh Hash- ana because to visit the cemetery is to make the in- dividual assume a more It M., serious approach to life. Visiting the cemetery im- presses him with the fact that a person is limited in his span of life as he is in his abilities and powers. It also teaches him that life is comparatively short and that there is a greater power than man who holds the life of every individual in His hand. According to another line of thought the visit to the cemetery is to ask the de- ceased to pray for us from his heavenly abode. In a time of crisis one seeks every available means of help. Some even inject a third line of reasoning which states that even the dead pass through some kind of judgement and one is there- fore praying for the dead in his visit to the cemetery. The shofar is sounded every weekday of the month before Rosh Hash- ana to arouse the con- science of the people so that they may repent their wrongdoings before the High Holy Days. It is also reminiscent of the shofar which was blown when Moses went up to Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments which occurred the second time during this month. He also appealed to the Almighty for the forgiveness of his people during this month. The reason it is not blown on the day before Rosh Hashana is to distinguish be- tween the custom of blow- ing the shofar before Rosh Hashana and the biblical re- quirement to blow it on the day of Rosh Hashana. The former is a custom while the latter is a biblical commandment for another reason. Italian-Israel Bank BombTarget PARIS (JTA)—A small bomb exploded Monday night outside the Italian-Is- rael Bank in Milan. The ex- plosion, which caused no casualties, shattered win- dows and damaged a car parked near the bank. The Milan police said the explosion might have been the work of right-wing sym- pathizers of Nazi war crimi- nal Herbert Kappler who re- cently escaped to West Ger- many from a prison hospi- tal in Rome. Nobility of character is better than nobility of birth. than the Iranian national av- erage. The only problem, accord- ing to the delegation, is that communication with other Jewish communities is lack- ing. It is for this reason as well that American Jews are being urged to visit Iran. The delegation consists of Mrs. Shamsi Hekmat, presi- dent of the Iranian Jewish Women's Organization; Moussa Kermanian, secre- tary of the Iranian Jewish community; and Prof. I. LaLazari, chairman of the department of pharma- cology at the University of Teheran. The delegation was hosted in New York by American Sephardi Feder- ation (ASF) president Li- liane Winn and members of New York's Iranian Jewish community at ASF head- quarters. According to Kermanian, the 2,500-year-old Iranian Jewish community—which numbers 80,000—"is now ex- periencing an era of free- dotn and prosperity unprece- dented since Cyrus the Great." Cyrus was the king of Persia mentioned in the Book of Daniel who granted total liberty and freedom of practice to the ancient Per- sian Jewish Diaspora. "Jews in Iran," be said, "represent a social elite which is integrally involved in every sector of the econo- my and academia. No doors are closed to Jews." The delegation reported that the 50,000-member Teheran Jewish community is highly developed and or- ganized. There are more than 20,000 young Jews en- rolled in various levels of the educational system and the percentage of Jews in universities is even higher We play EVERY TYPE OF MUSIC 2323471 Kenosha 398-6861 Abe Weberman Ticket Ckairertee't 626-5224 Sol Kleinman Ticket Co Chairmen KE 5-3589 Simon Schvarzberg 557-1141 e Leo Halpern 353-9237 1-7450 Mrs. Ben Fisk 533-1993 Gedale Elbaum LI 8-7339 Sonia Popowski 5574994 Max Drew 559-4813 Helen Balberman 968-3791 Louis A pfelblatt 542-0521 Air Conditioned Hall Adat Shalom Synagogue Invite The Many Friends of Philanthropist and Community Leader Who Have Worked With Him In Support of Israel, Jewish Education, Health Care To join Us At A Testimonial Dinner Honoring His Outstanding Achievements In Behalf Of Our Synagogue Wednesday, September 7, 1977 Adat Shalom Synagogue 29901 Middlebelt Road Farmington Hills, Michigan Cocktails and Hors D'oeuvres —6:30 P.M.
