LEIBERMAN Mr. Meyer Levin, President Vaad Issues Holiday Guide The Vaad Harabonim- Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Greater Detroit—has is- sued a guide for the High Holy Days. Among the points contained therein, are: • Tashlich: On the first day of Rosh Hashana (or the second if the first day occurs on Shabat) it is cus- tomary to walk along the banks of the river or the seashore in order to reflect on the purifying effect that water has on the body and to be remembered that even as the body is purified by water, so can the soul be purified by repentance and by a sincere appeal to the help of God. A passage from the prophet Micah is recited and the custom de- rives its name from the opening passage : "And Thou shalt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea." • Kaporos : This custom is utilized to impress the Jew with the thought that even if because of his sins he feels that he deserves a pun- ishment at the hand of God, yet by virtue of his sincere repentance the Lord, in His infinite mercy and good- ness, is ready to forgive him and grant him life. The ceremony consists of twirl- ing the fowl around the head three times after the Midrasha College of Jewish Studies The Midrasha College of Jewish Studies will reopen classes on September 7, at the college, 21550 West 12 Mile Road, South- field. Many people use money in- stead of a fowl and give that money to charity. • Hoshana Raba: Accord- ing to tradition the final seal of the decree for the New Year is proclaimed on this day. Another opportu- nity is thus offered to those who did not take full advan- tage of the High Holy Days. High point of this service is the beating of the willow branches which follows the ceremony of encircling the synagogue seven times with the lulav and etrog. • Shemini Atzeret: On this day the Tefila Geshem prayer for rain, is recited. Since the fall and winter are the rainy seasons in Is- rael, we pray for the bless- ings of a full measure of rain, so vital to the life of the land. Shemini Atzeret, also is one of the four days of the year on which the Yizkor is recited. • The Four Species: To ob- serve Sukkot, the holiday of harvest and thanksgiving, the Bible enjoins us to take the "Fruit of a goodly tree, branches of a palm tree, boughs of thick trees and willows of the brook." • Na'anuim: Refers to the waving of the species when they are all held together. They are waved in all direc- tions to show that God, who is the source of all bless- ings, is present above and below, in the North, South, East and West. Budapest Jewry Lacks Funds BUDAPEST (JTA)—The Budapest Jewish commu- nity is faced with a serious financial deficit which could jeopordize its commu- nal services. The community's Presi- dent, Imre Heber, said that while expenses have soared because of rising prices, the community's income has remained unchanged. The community operated 30 synagogues, a kosher res- taurant, a school, a commu- nal center and a home for the aged. Heber called upon all community members to in- crease their contributions to the community fund. The president of the Or- thodox community, Herman Fixler, who attended the meeting, launched a similar appeal. He said that Hun- garian Jewry "will over- come all difficulties" and continue operating all its services. BE HAIR FREE ELECTROLYSIS $7.50 1 /2 hr.
