Reform Join Zionist Federation

NEW YORK (JTA)—The

establishment of the Associ-
ation of Reform Zionists of
America I ARTZA ) and its
affiliation with the Ameri-
can Zionist community
under the umbrella of the
American Zionist- Feder-
ation "marks a quantum
leap forward toward the uni-
fication of the American
.Jewish community in sup-
port of Israel and the Zion-
ist idea. -
This view was expressed
by Mrs. Faye Schenk. AZF
president. at the conclusion
of a session of the AZF ex-
ecutive committee which
voted to admit the new Re-
form Zionist group into the
AZF.
"The Reform move-
ment." Mrs. Schenk added.
"has demonstrated its deep
commitment and concern
for Zionism. its goals and
aspirations. We welcome
them with open arms. - -
This is the first time that
the AZF has admitted a
new constituent organiza-
tion. The other 14 con-
stituents were all in exist-
ence prior to the formation
of the AZF.

has announced.that 116 resi-
dent lectureships. a record
number of • accredited col-
lege courses in Judaism.
have -been endowed by the
society for the 1977-78 aca-
demic Year.
Officials said that to date.
the society has endowed
courses in Judaica at 206
colleges in the United
States and Canada.

AMSTERDAM (JTA)—
The trial of Pieter Menten.
charged with mass murders
in the Lemberg area in the
summer of 1941. was re-
sumed Thursday.
The special tribunal of
the Amsterdam district
court will hear four wit-
nesses fr-om what is now
Russian territory. who will
come to Amsterdam at the
request of the public prose-
cutor.

Quake in Israel

The Seismological Institute
of Israel's Institute of Geolo-
gy reported that. a minor
earth tremor' measuring
four points on the Richter
scale was felt in the .Jordan
valley Aug. 18.
The epicenter was report-
ed to have been some 30
miles northeast of .Jerusa-
lem. The shock was felt in
some high-rise buildings in
Jerusalem. Furniture was
shaken but there was no
damage. according to the
report.
The Jordan valley. part
of the Syro-African rift. is
known for seismic activity
which caused a great deal
of destruction in the past.
The last severe quake was
in 1927.
