last week. of Julius
"Groucho" Marx. another,
wonderful legend in show
business also died.
Only Zeppo is left of the
Marx Brothers... Gone are
Groucho. Chico. Harpo and
Gummo.
Groucho was infatuated
with words... He didn't re-
gard words the way the
rest of us do... He looked at
them upside down. back-
wards, from the middle out
to the end. and from the
end back to the middle...
Next he dropped them in a
mental Mixmaster, and
studied them some
more...Groucho didn't look
for double meanings...He
looked for quadruple mean-
ings...and usually found
them.
One day an officious lady
at the Brown Derby in Hol-
lywood pushed a waiter
aside, leveled a finger at
Groucho, and demanded.
Are you Harpo
Marx?"... Groucho raised
an eyebrow and replied,
"No, are you?"

An elderly book clerk in
Hollywood still suffered for
hours later from the shock
sustained when Groucho en-
tered her shop and inquired
blandly, "Have you some-
thing obscene for a 7-year-
old girl?"

Groucho netted many
thousands a week with his
radio and television chores,
but there was a time when
all four Marx brothers to-
gether had a difficult job
keeping the wolf away from
the door...When traveling
from one town to another
their,mother, Minnie Marx,
dressed them up in short
pants and Buster Brown col-
lars so they could ride for
half fare...Once. when a har-
rassed conductor informed
Mrs. Marx that her "little
boys" were smoking cigars,
chasing girls. and playing
poker in the coach ahead.
she beamed at him and con-
fided, - They grow so fast. -

turn was Waukeo- an...In the
orchestra pit. a kid
b named
Kubelskv played the fiddle,
and doubled up with laugh-
ter every time Groucho
opened his mouth...40 years
later. Kubelsv was still
laughing at Groucho... Then.
however, he was known as
Jack Benny.
Groucho's legion of admi-
rers can never forget the
classic scene in which he
played Napoleon bidding
farewell to a slightly
bleary-eyed Jose-
phine... -Jo." he would de-
clare, seizing her in his
arms. - your eyes shine like
the seat of my blue serge
pants, and I know you are
as true as a three-dollar
cornet. But hark. they are
playing the Mayonnaise!
The army must be dress-
ing."...Josephine came out
of her trance to answer,
"Nappy. I am true to the
French army."... -Thank
heaven." Groucho shouted.
"France has no navy."
The funny patter of the
Marx Brothers is still re-
membered by many. with
the funniest lines usually
going to Groucho...One con-.
cerned his African hunting
trip and he began with
"Did I ever tell you how I
shot a wild elephant in my
pajamas? How he got into
my pajamas I'll never
know: Getting his tusks off
was quite a problem. "...He
came home in a rick-
shal,v...The meter regis-
tered $11.40... - Confound it,"
he roared to the driver.
"Didn't I tell you not to go
through India'?"

Then there was the skit
where Grouch() and Chico
served as opposing law-
yers...Chico be came
tongue-tied when it was his
turn to question the wit-
ness...The judge thundered.
"Well, ask your witness
some questions."..."All-a-
right," said Chico.. "What's
a big-a-da animal wid four
legs an' a trunk in da
front?"..."That's
irrele-
vant,"
screamed
Groucho..."Dat's a right,"
agreed Chico... Groucho
crossed the stage. planted
his portfolio on the judge's
bench, and declared, "I
rest my case."

The Marx Brothers once
became the managers of a
prize fighter...He was a lum-
bering giant named Cohen.
and richly earned the nick-
name of "Canvasback - by
an invariable custom of get-
ting himself knocked cold
in round one of every
fight...The boys had a great
time with Canvasback
Cohen until one day, accord-
ing to legend, Grouch()
knocked him out in a gym-
nasium workout...That was
too much... Groucho claims
that CanvasbaCk started as
a lightweight. but was hit
so many times that he
swelled out into a heavy.
In "Monkey Business - ,
Groucho discovered a large
automatic pistol and near it
