26 Friday, August 26, 1977 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Danny .Raskin's LARCO'S LISTENING Fine Italian-American Cuisine POST 7523 W. McNichols Rd. UN 2-6455 15 YEARS is a long time to be at one spot...and folks sort of go force-of-habit so to speak...but the fine las- sies of Brandeis University National Women's Com- mittee, Greater Detroit Chapter, have been going all out in efforts to let people know about the change in locale of their an- nual "New Books For Old Sale"...Sept. 1-7. Since its beginning, the sale site was Northland... This year it will be in busy Tel-12 Mall on Telegraph and 12 Mile Rd. The book categories take in just about every topic for students, scholars and pleas- ure readers... But the books on medicine still remain one of the big sellers... People are always looking to see if anything is wrong with them...so they can tell their doctor before he exam- ines them! GEORGE AMES had a dream that he fell off a horse and broke his arm... George never rode a horse, so he probably would have been thrown... What he can't understand, though, is how the bed bucked him... George woke up on the floor, his arm bent under him...broken. WHILE IN TOWN last week, Las Vegas-ite Sid Hudson, former Detroiter, was guest of honor at a De- troit Businessmen's Group, City of Hope meeting, and as usual wherever he goes here, it was like old home week. As 1978 National Honoree for the City of Hope, with his dinner scheduled for March 12 at the Las Vegas Hilton, Sid to many is still the same Sid Hudosh of years ago. Now as "Mr. Las Vegas", Sid is widely recognized for his humanitarian ideals. When approached by the heads of the National City of Hope, Sid balked at the li- melight...but further consid- eration enveloped whereby a research project on ileitis has been started at the med- ical center. One of Sid's family is af- flicted with ileitis... Its cause and cure is worth everything to him...along with helping others with un- fortunate catastrophic dis- eases. TRIP TO ISRAEL by Per- fection Lodge No. 486, has grown beyond expecta- tions... Over 200 are leaving on two flights...Sept. 28 and Sept. 29... with limited num- ber of accommodations left before a sell-out is realized. Info about the Israel trip can be gotten from Shep Schuldinger, 548-4741. WOULD BE SOME- THING if somebody in- vented the impossible...a parking space to carry in the trunk of your car... ERRATA...Sorry, left out the name of cashier Sue Thomason in recent Jax Kar Wash item. MAIL DEPT... "The ques- tion raised in your column of Aug. accommodations by Mrs. Bernice Robinson, is the real meaning of the term, mezzuza?' de- serves an answer. The word mezzuza means door- post. The Torah (Deutero- nomy 6:4-9) teaches us the basis of our faith; 'Hear 0 Israel. The Lord Our God, The Lord Is One,' This por- tion ends with the com- mandment. 'You shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and in your gates.' "A mezzuza, therefore, as The Code of Jewish Law states, is a piece of parch- ment on which this portion from the Torah together with Deuteronomy 11:13-21 have been handwritten by a scribe, using a quill, in the same manner that a Torah is written. The time to prop- erly write this, on the aver- age, is between two and three hours. The cost of the mezzuza will vary, based on the quality of parchment and the skill of the scribe. "Since it is impractical to put this parchment directly on the doorpost, a cover can be purchased to proper- ly house the mezzuza scroll. The mezzuza is neither a good luck token, nor does it have any direct bearing to the Ten Commandments, other than its proclaiming the message of the First Commandment, 'I am The Lord Your God...'
