West Bloomfield OKs Temple
Plan to Move to Suburban Site

Unanimous approval of a
site plan to build a new fa-
cility on Walnut Lake Road.
a mile north of the .Jewish
Community Center. was
granted Temple Israel this
week by the West
Bloomfield Township
Board.
The action followed on
the heels of a unanimous
recommendation for approv-
al by the community's plan-
ning commission. and
ended a four-year effort by
the congregation to build at
that location.
On four separate occa-
sions, Temple Israel had
been turned down by the
planning commission, and
last year resorted to the
courts in its struggle to
erect a new facility in the
township.
The court ruled that a
building permit must be is-
sued to Temple Israel.
In the intervening time.
however. a new plan was
drawn by architect Peter
Tara-pata. and this new
plan has been approved and
will be constructed on a 23-
acre site.

Temple Israel. chartered
as the second Reform con-
gregation in the Detroit
area in 1941. has grown to
he the largest Reform
temple in Michigan with a
membership of nearly 1.600
families.

The congregation has
been in its present location
on Manderson Road since
1950. The opening of the
new facility is expected by
the High Holy Days of 1979.
Cost of construction of
the new facility is budgeted
at $5 million. The 75.000
square foot building has
been cut from the originally
submitted plan by almost
20.000 square feet.
The new building will in-
elude a 1.000-seat sanc-
tuary. 600-seat school audito-
rium and theater. social
hall accommodating 500 for
dinner. a classroom and
nursery facility. youth
room. chapel seating 200. a
library-multi media center
and administrative offices.

raising for the project will
