Selihot Prayers, Services Defined

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.)

"Selihot - comes from the
singular known "Selihaa"
which means forgiveness.
Prayers which ask for for-
giveness are characterized
by the plural term "Sell-
hot."
These prayers are recited
in times of crisis or on days
which commemorate such
a period of crisis. Thus they
are recited 'on Yom Kippur
when mankind is being
judged regarding life and
death issues, fast-days,
days of trouble in the com-
munity, etc. What is most
popularly referred to as
Selihot are the collection of
prayers recited in the syna-
gogue before the High Holi-
days beginning with the
midnight of the Saturday
night which occurs at least
four days before Rosh Hash-
ana. (This year, Sept. 3).
Jewish tradition requires
that the first of the selihot
sessions take place in the
synagogue after midnight on
Saturday night.
Several reasons are of-
fered for this practice.
First, some claim that after
having observed the Sab-
bath and still being some-
what imbued by the Sab-
bath spirit the Jew is in the
best spiritual state of the
week to ask the forgiveness
of the Almighty.
The question then re-
mains as to why we wait
until after the midnight,
hours. The mystical tradi-
tion asserts that the time to
stimulate the divine attri-

Action Postponed
on U.S. ILO Role,

WASHINGTON (.JTA)—A
Cabinet level meeting at
the White House decided to
put off final action on
whether the United States
will ,. remain in the Inter-
national Labor Organization
after Nov. 5.
That date marks the end
of the two-year period of no-
tice of intention by the U.S.
to leave that United Na-
tions body on the grounds
that it has gone outside its
charter- and become politi-
cized by its attacks on the
U.S.. Israel and others. The
State Department said that
for the "time being' . the
U S. letter of withdrawal
will stand.
1FI,-C10 president
George Merinv. at the meet-
ing with the Cabinet.
pressed for an immediate
decision for withdrawal.

bute of mercy is after mid-
night—especially during the
first recitation.
The 'second reason has to
do with the spirit of the Sab-
bath. The Sabbath, being a
day of rest and peace, is in-
deed not the occasion for
regret which is the spirit
generated by the Selihot
prayers.
A Jew is supposed to
have inner peace on the Sab-
bath and not be reminded
of his pangs of guilt. The
tendency is to extend this
peaceful mood of the Sab-
bath as long as possible—at
least until midnight, instead
of trying to "get rid" of the
Sabbath as quickly as pos-
sible.
Hence the first of the Seli-
hot services traditionally
takes place after the first
midnight which follows the

Sabbath so that the Jew
will not be reminding him-
self of his sins until the Sab-
bath spirit is well in the
background.
