Blanchard, Brodhead Reaffirm Urgency of U.S. Transferring Embassy to Jerusalem At an impressive ceremo- ny that was attended by a capacity gathering at the Zi- onist Cultural Center. Wednesday morning. Con- gressmen James Ranchard and William Brodhead ac- cepted petitions with more - than 8.000 signatures appeal- ing to President Carter to adhere to the Democratic Party platform recognizing .Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The petitions asked that the U.S. embassy be trans- ferred from Tel Aviv and that a party pledge be hon- ored. The objectives of • the peti- tions were outlined by Louis Panush. chairman of the public affairs com- mittee of the Zionist Organi- zation of Detroit. who. with the assistance of his en- chairman. Hymie Cutler. su- pervised distribution of the 'petitions. Rep. Brodhead responded to the presentation with a statement in which he al- . firmed a position he had taken enrsing the Demo- cratic pledge. While he con- ceded that the government in Washington is "less expe- rienced" in handling the for- eign policies of the nation. he had confidence that the . pledges to defend Israel's rights will be adhered to. . he reduced in any form. On the question of report- ed erosions in friendships • During the question peri- od that followed the presen- tations. Congressman Brod- head said he believed that reports of erosions in con- gressional interests in sup- port of Israel were exagger- ated. He gave assurance that the friends of Israel will strive for continuing de- fense of Israel's right to live and to survive. between Israel and . the United States, Rep. Blan- chard commented that the negative reactions to Men- ahem Begin in editorials in the American press have somewhat influenced the thinking of members of Con- gress, but he, too, ex- pressed the hope that the commitments by this coun- try will not be injured.
