Social Worker in Israel, 86;
Worked With Henrietta Szold
Word was received here
this week of the death in Is-
rael of Dr. Reuben Katznel-
son, one of the most promi-
nent of the Zionist pioneer
social workers and a leader
in the General Zionist Move-
ment. His wife, Bathsheba,
was among the earliest
members of the Israel Knes-
set, representing the Gener-
al Zionist Liberal Party.
His son, Shmuel Tamir,
who also served in the Knes-
set a_nd had been an associ-

LONDON—Lord Cohen of
Birkenhead. one of Brit-
ain's most eminent physi-
cians, died Aug. 7 at age 77.
He had served as presi-
dent of the British Medical
Association, the Royal So-
ciety of Medicine and. since
1958, the Royal Society of
Health.
In an eloquent speech in
1962 in the House of Lords,
he defended the ritual
slaughter of animals
against a proposed bill that
was later withdrawn.
He was life president of
the King David Foundaiton
for Liverpool's Jewish
Schools and was president
of London's Jewish home
for the aged. He was a gov-
ernor of Hebrew Univer-
sity, president of the Anti-
TB League of Israel. coun-
cil member of the Weiz-
mann Institute and honor-
ary president of the British
Friends of Magen David
Adom.
Aron Klein, 82
Aron Klein. 82. a member
of Cong. Bnai- Moshe for 45
years and chairman of its
sick and visiting com-
mittee, died Aug. 13.
Mr. Klein was also a
member of the Jewish Com-
munity Center Business-
men's Club and a member
of Pisgah Lodge for 35
year. He resided at 19637
W. 12 Mile Rd.. Southfield.
He is survived by his
wife. Sophia; a son, Law-
rence; a daughter. Mrs.
Melvin (Lillian) Weisz ;
a brother, Charles of Pitts-
burgh; six grandchildren
and two great-grand-
children.

NEW YORK—Milton
Arons, for the past 16 years
administrative director of
the International Ladies
Garment Workers Union
Health Center in New York.
died recently at age 60.
He was a laboi- organizer
for 22 years before taking a
health administrator posi-
tion with the Amalgamated
Laundry Workers Union.
He took the ILGWU posi-
tion in 1961. Mr. Arons was
the nephew of Gertrude Fei-
ler of Detroit.

studies for her doctorate at
the University of Michigan
and who conducted the
Ulpan at Natanya.
Dr. Katznelson, who was
86, was among the earliest
associates of Henrietta
Szold when the founder of
the Hadassah Medical Or-

in Israel. He was the organ-
izer of the independent
health services in Palestine
and pursued the task of aid-
ing TB sufferers after the
creation of Israel.
He had toured the United
States, also visiting Detroit,
on lecture tours for the Zion-
ist cause.
Ernst Bloch, Philosopher, 92
BONN (JTA) — Ernst
Bloch, regarded as one of
the most brilliant and con-
troversial 20th Century phi-
losophers, has died of heart
failure at Tuebingen, West
Germany. He was 92 years
old.
The son of wealthy par-
ents, Bloch, regarded as a
"utopian Marxist," studied
in Berlin and, as an avowed
pacifist, went into exile in
Switzerland during World
War I.
His first major work,
"Der Geist der Utopie"
(The Spirit of Utopia), ap-
peared in 1918, reflecting a
mixture of Christian mystic-
ism, Jewish messianism
and cabalistic ideas.
Along with other promi-
nent German Jewish philos-
ophers such as Max Hor-
kheimer and Herbert Mar-
cuse, Bloch emigrated to
America in the 1930s where
he wrote his main work,
"Das Prinzip Hoffnung"
(The Principle of Hope).
Later he settled in East

Mrs. Savage was born in
New York. She had worked
at the psychiatric hospital
10 years before she retired
one year ago.
She was a member of
Bnai Brith Women and Ha-
dassah. Mrs. Savage re-
sided at 31873 Kingswood

She is survived by her
husband Sidney; two daugh-
ters. Mrs. Leslie Wilhelm of
Saginaw and Mrs. Bonnie
Carrick; her mother, Mrs.
Rose Plack; a brother. Sam
Rosner of Lyndhurst. Ohio.

Hartstein of Sherman Oaks,

Lou Walters, 81,
of Latin Quarter
NEW YORK — Lou Wal-
ters, former owner of the
Latin Quarter night club in
New York and father of
Barbara Walters of ABC-
TV News, died Aug. 15 at
age 81 in Miami.
Germany, lecturing at Leip-
zig University, but because
of political differences with
the ruling party emigrated
once again, to West Ger-
many in 1957. Block held
the post of philosophy pro-
fessor at Tuebingen Univer-
sity until his death.

19, a sophomore student at
Harvard University, died
Aug. 13.
Mr. Kapetansky was elec-
trocuted when the mast of
a sail boat he and his fa-
ther were docking on Cass
Lake touched a power line.
He resided at 24652 Santa
Barbara, Southfield.
He is survived by his par-
ents, Dr. and Mrs. Donald
I. (Nedra) Kapetansky; two
sisters, Mrs. Michael
(Carol) Golob and Mrs.
