He retired as general di- rector of the Jewish Com- munity Centers of Chicago in 1966 after 19 years of leadership there. Prior to his last position, he had also served as execu- tive director of Bronx House in New York, the Jewish Community Center in Detroit, the Council Educational Alliance of Cleveland and the Irene Kaufmann Center in Pitts- burgh. Melt- zer, 73, a renowned journal- ist in pre-state Israel and then an administrator for the Weizmann Institute, died Aug. 6. The London-born Meltzer emigrated to Palestine at the age of 17 to become a "cub reporter" for the Pa- lestine Weekly. Within five years he be- came Jerusalem corre- spondent for the London Jewish Chronicle, a post he held for 25 years. and also was correspondent for Reu- ters. the New York Times. the Daily Express, the Daily Mail and other news- papers in England and America. By the mid-1930s he was reputed to be the highest- paid journalist in the Middle East, earning more than the British High Com- missioner. He scooped the world in 1946 with his Reu- ters flash of the King David Hotel explosion. It was about that time that Melt7.er left journalism to become executive vice chairman for public affairs at Up Weizmann Institute. He retired in 1972. but continued as executive vice chairman of Yad Chaim Weizmann, director of its archives and managing di- rector of the Weizmann Let- ters and Papers. a mon- umental research project. the first volume of which was published in 1968. Six more volumes have been published and several more are in progress. He also wrote poems and was a skillful translator and was the author of an as yet unpublished historical novel about Jerusalem.
