Words of Wisdom from Rashi Proper Jewish Wedding Requires Quorum of 10

Rabbi Sholomo Ben-
Yitzhak, popularly
known as Rashi, was born
in Troyes,,France, in the
year 1040, and grew up to
be the most popular
commentator of the
Tanakh and Talmud.
Many legends have been
woven around his life and
personality, although lit-
tle is known of his life.
His commentary was
written in simple and
concise style accom-
panied by legends and
wise sayings. 5',0 the pre-
sent day the commentary
of Rashi is widely used
among students of Bible
Ai nd Talmud. Among his
liramous sayings are the
following:
- An absolutely sinless
person is not in existence.

The favors of the•
wicked are never com-
plete. ,
Even the teacher still
needs learning.
One cannot argue with
the angel of death.
The fool is unaware of
his faults.
A cheerless person
takes up everybody's
worries. —
Ile who loves learning
has never enough of it.
disregards
Hatred
dropriety._
Silence is a fine art.
It is good to cultivate
the habit of using the
words, "I do not know."
Respect your fellow
Man; like you, he was
created in the image of
God.

A -Jewish wedding re-
quires a‘ quorum of a min-
yan. The rabbis have
traced this requirement to
some passages in The Bible.
One of these passages-is the
description of Boaz who
married Ruth (Ruth 4:2)
where it is written that he
assembled "ten people
from the elders • of the
city."
Another of these passages
is the one from the Book of
Psalms (Psalms 68:27)
where it is written that
The Lord is to be blessed
in assemblies ... from the
source . ." This is meant
to imply that when serious
matters like basic tradi-
tions are involved, the bless-
ings should be recited in
the midst of a public quo-
rum.
At least two logical rea-
sons are advanced for this
requirement. One is that
the effect of the marriage
?affects the public (since no
one else after that can

marry the bride or groom),
it should be a matter of pub-
lic acclaim and knowledge.
The second is that care
should be taken with the re-
quirement of Jewish law.
