Israelis on Camelback Patrol Sinai to Help Fight Smuggling

NAHAL YAM, Israeli
Sinai — Lt. Yehuda is a ki-
bitz farmer who heads
camel-mounted troops pa-
trolling the dunes and palm
oases up and down the UN
buffer zone.
The camel unit is sta-
tioned along the forward
lines of the limited-forces
zone provided for in the in-
terim agreement former
Secretary of State Henry A.
Kissinger negotiated be-
tween Israel and Egypt in
1975.
The troops are charged
with keeping tabs on the
Bedouin tribes who once mi-

grated freely across the
desert but now are limited
to the 15-mile-wide UN zone
between the two sides.

Dressed in headcloths,
pants, coats and robes be-
cause of — not despite —
the heat, the Bedouin tend
camels and goats and bar-
vest dates, but the region is
so desolate 'that hay has to
be trucked in so the ani-
mals can eat.

So they turn to smuggl-
ing, bringing in whatever is
cheaper on one side and
selling it on the other.
Often, the merchandise
goes on across the Sinai

and through Israel's Negev
to Jordan and Saudi
Arabia.
A 220-pound bag of coffee
brings the equivalent of
$160 on the Israeli market,
while subsidies keep it
down to $100 in Cairo.
The soldiers' dress uni-
forms show a winged camel
and a jeep on the shoulder
patch but, on the patrol, the
dress is green fatigues.

Patrols can last as long a
week. The men are volun-
teers — "crazy about it,
like me," their lieutenant
said.

shoot-outs in the past, Yeh-
uda, a former paratroop in-
structor, said the smugg-
lers generally do not put up
a fight when his troops
order them to stop.
They follow the camei
tracks with the help of Bed-
ouin scouts, who have been
part of the unit since it was
founded at the time of the
Israeli War of Independ-

"It's enough for them to
see us, - he said. "They'd
rather keep things quiet."

Israel Will Pay
Dearly for Oil

arm

JERUSALEM — Last
year Israel consumed
seven million tons of
crude oil at a cost of $700
million. The recent price
hike in oil prices will force
Israel to spend at least
$70 million more in the
copying year.
The government must
now decide whether to
absorb the added budget
burden, or pass the price
increase on to the public.
The latter could set off a
chain reaction of price
rise that would have seri-
ous consequences for Is-
rael's economy.
