For Rosh Hashana, the traditional Magen David, universally recognized as a symbol of Judaism and part of the official flag of Israel, is presented on an elegent three-panel paper cut-out, in white interlaced with gold. It carries the message "May- The New Year Bring You Peace, Good Health and Joy" in both English and Hebrew; personalized imprints are also available. Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, chairman of the Conference, made public last week a letter he had sent to George Papoulia, Greece's Ambassador to the UN, voicing "shock and dismay" at the vote of the Greek delegation to the UN Economic and Social Coun- cil (ECOSOC) last month in favor of full membership status for the PLO in ECWA. Greece was the only West- em nation to vote in favor of the successful PLO bid for full membership status. The vote in ECOSOC to grant member-status to the PLO was 27-11. Twelve countries abstained. The United States voted against the PLO, along with Aus- tria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zea- land, Norway and the United Kingdom. NEW YORK (JTA)— While the nervous grooms- to-be waited for their future Syrian Jewish brides at JFK International Ai et, the Air France flight from Damascus taxied to a stop on schedule shortly after 8 p.m. last Thursday night. Soon the 13 Syrian women set foot in America after a long and tiring flight and 12 of them were introduced to the men of Brooklyn's Syr- ian Jewish community whom they had married by proxy July 19 in Damascus. A 13th woman, a widow with three children, was re- leased at the last moment to be re-united with her brother "in a humanitarian gesture" by the Syrians, said Rep. Stephen Solarz, (D-NY). Solarz, who repre- sents the more than 25,000 Syrian Jews who live in Brooklyn, has been in the forefront of efforts to obtain the right to emigrate for Syrian Jews who wish to leave WALLCOVERINGS 23061 COOLIDGE HWY. France, Saudi Arabia Close Multi-Million Dollar Arms Deal ( Caricatures PARIS (JTA)—France has agreed to sell Saudi Arabia "hundreds of mil- lions of dollars" worth of airplanes, sophisticated electronic material and oth- er military hardware, ac- cording to the French-based Arab newspaper, "Al Na- har". The Lebanese weekly, now published in Paris, re- ports in its forthcoming issue that France and Saudi Arabia have concluded an agreement which coulci, turn out to be France's largest arms contract ever to have been signed. It provides, writes "Al Nahar" for the sale of a whole series of Mi- rage planes, models C-35, F-4 and F-3S, electronic radar equipment, tanks and artillery. The paper provides no de- tails as to the quantities of material to be sold and French officials were not prepared to comment on the deal, or even acknowl- edge its existence. The Arabic paper also an- nounced that Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko will arrive in Cairo on Sept. 1 in order to renew Soviet- Egyptian contacts after the "failure of the Vance mis- sion". Gromyko last met with Egyptian Foreign Min- ister Ismail Fahmy in Mos- cow in June. "Al Nahar" says the So- viet Union has stepped up its diplomatic activity in the Middle East. The Soviet Ambassador in Beirut, Alex- ander Soldatov, writes "Al Anahar", last week met on three different occasions with Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasir Arafat and gave assurances that it will not attend a Gen- eva conference without the active participation of the PLO. "Al Nahar" adds that a Palestinian delegation is due to visit Moscow next month after Gromyko's re- turn from Cairo. A bequest to the Jewish National Fund should be as traditional as having a Blue Box in one's home. You may want your bequest to be dedicated to afforestation, to a village, a Nachlah, to a children's play arqa, to perpetual yahrzeit or kaddish, or to some form of permanent tribute in the names of persons dear to you.
