VOLKSWAGEN AND PORSCHE CARS. ///////77 By DR. MILTON STEINHARDT The story of the Baeder- Meinhof terrorist gang in Germany during the early 70's is so overwhelming that one still wonders how and why it all began. While the book is full of details, the motivating forces are not adequately explained. One has to read between the lines — it is like trying to obtain a picture of the forest by focusing on the trees. "Hitler's Children" by Jul- / ian Becker • (Lippincott), is ''----zbasically the story of a left- ist Marxist group, represent- ing frustrated lives, that sprang up ostensibly in the late 60's in response to the Vietnam War, that distin- guished itself in its ruthless- ness, sadism, reckless mur- der, all with the pretense of altruism and idealism. Indeed, there is an implied connection between the children born in the 30's and raised in the Hitler era and the adult desperados who terrorized many in- nocent people for no ration- al reason other than lust for power. The common origin of the guerilla movement and that of National Socialism lay in the frustration of the middle class—in accepting the principle that the end justifies the means, and the principle of author- itarianism that the gang leader as the new Fuhrer may execute its own mem- bers for disobedience and dissention. The connection with the PLO terror activities is more than the affinity for Marxism. The antagonism to the Jews must have been imbibed with their mother's milk, and any guilt feelings were dismissed by claims that the genocide activity of the Hitler era was done by "the fascist pigs." It hardly occurred to them that they were indeed imitating their author- itarian predecessors, under a different disguise or label. The best example was at Entebbe, Uganda, when this terrorist gang sep- arated the Jewish from the non-Jewish passengers. When one of the hostages re- minded them the procedure Was similar to Hitler's, the terrorist replied: "I am not a Nazi; I am an anti-fas- cist." One cannot escape the underlying similarity. Another illustration is the avowed anti-Zionism which is in essence anti-Semitism a la Hitler. _ For the right diamond At the right price Buy with confidence Norman Allan& To. It was this mas- ked anti-Semitism that per- meated most of the off- spring of the Nazi gener- ation, some of whom car- ried their virus to Cairo, Beirut, and the centers of South America. The author clearly shows the discrepancy between the real motivating forces and the pretense of al- truism — the contrast be- tween identification with the poor and the down- trodden, and the terrorists' insatiable desire for money, wealth and luxury. - In the case of Meinhof, the so-called Queen of the CALL. Guerillas, it was evident that she changed "radi- cally" from a New Leftist to an outlaw bank robber and sadistic murderer. She even ignored the care of her two daughters when her husband left her for another woman. With the pretense of "nothing personal," she embarked upon an all-out vicious attack against him on political grounds, thus confirming the saying "There is no greater fury than a woman scorned". 548-3926 548-4160 541-9704 1018 W. 9 Mile Rd. Alfons G. Rehme As stated above, despite the voluminous narratives of names, places and events this book is short on psychological insight. Must we then explain it on the basis that they were Hit- ler's children? The title sug- gests that this was the au- thor's intent. Between Livernois & Pinehurst FULL TIME PROTECTION FROM Terror Hunt Makes Taut Novel An imaginative. plot, sus- penseful action, and a detec- tive-story-like flavor give "17 Ben Gurion" by Jack Hoffenberg (Putnam) a readability that makes the book, once begun, hard to put down. The story centers around the attempts of a fiendishly clever and brutal terrorist group, the United Palesti- nian Freedom Party, to de- stroy the Israeli Bashra oil drilling and refinerly com- plex in the Sinai — an oil deposit rich enough to make Israel a world petro- leum power. From the Special Oper- ations Bureau at 17 Ben Gu- rion in Tel Aviv, secret agents, led by Major Saul Lahav, fan out into the Middle East and Eastern Europe to prove that the , new terrorist organization does indeed exist, and to trace the conspiracy to its source and see it destroyed. Intricately interwoven with the action in 17 Ben Gurion is the personal emo- tional conflict regarding Saul - Lahav's past, in- volving the death of his son, and estrangement from his American wife. This at first reading may appear to be a standard spy-story attempt to make a character more believable by giving him a dose of domestic distress, but Hoffenberg works the angle nicely and it becomes an integral part of the story, rather than an edi- table overlay. Some of Saul Lahav's brushes with death, and his survival of ordeals that would kill the ordinary ter- rorist hunter may seem a bit too unbelievably lucky, but one must remember FERNDALE MICH. MARV CHECK this is an adventure story and heroes must be heroic. Jack Hoffenberg's story of the pursuit and smashing of an elusive band of Pales- tinian terrorists, with its many side intrigues and col- orful characters maintains a high level of tension, mys- tery and action to satisfy most lovers of spy thrillers, and especially those who fol- low the events of the Middle East.
