Rabbi Leo Lichtenberg, New York Hillel Director tenant colonel. He was a for- mer president of the Nation- al Association of Hillel Di- rectors and a former national chaplain of the American Legion. Born in Rostock. Ger- many. Lichtenberg received his secondary education in Berlin before coming to this country in 1935. He earned a 'bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1938 and was ordained a rabbi by HUC-JIR in 1940. NEW YORK (JTA)—A burial service was held Aug. 4 in Farmingdale. N.Y. for Rabbi Leo Lichten- berg who died in Cincinnati Aug. 1 at the age of 62. He was Hillel Foundation director and adjunct assist- ant professor of religion at Ade1phi University in Gar- den City, L.I. for 20 years until his retirement jn 1974. Since retirement, he had meen serving as a catalo- guer at the Klau Library of the Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR-) in Cincinnati, Ohio. From 1954 to 1968, Lich- tenberg was director of Hill- el and an instructor in Hebr- ew at Hofstra University, L.I., concurrently with his service lit Adelphi. Earlier in his career, he directed Hillel activities at the Uni- versity of Virginia and at Ohio University. He also held pulpits at various periods at Wichita Falls, Texas. and at Charlot- tesville, Va. Lichtenberg was a U.S. Air Force chaplain in World War II and in the Ko- rean War, retiring as a lieu- Isidor Schneider YORK—Isidor NEW Schneider, 80, a leading left-wing novelist and poet in New York during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, died Aug. 3 in New York. He wrote a great body of literary criticsm and essays for The New Masses. The New Republic and The Na- tion. His novels were -Dr. Transit" (1925), "From the Kingdom of Necessity - ( 1935 ), described as autobio- graphical, and "The Judas - Time" (1947). He also wrote two volumes of poet- ry, -The Temptation of An- thony and Other Poems" (1927) and - Comrade, Mis- ter" (1936). Sidney S. Shapiro Sidney S. Shapiro, retired owner of Shapiro Brothers shoe store in Hamtramck, died Aug. 5. Mr. Shapiro, 86, was born in Lithuania and was a De- troit resident for 59 years. He operated Shapiro broth- ers from 1920 to 1970. He was a member of Adat Shalom Synagogue, Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith, Rosenwald Post of the American Legion and was secretary for the Business- men's Club of the Jewish Community Center.
