Dr. Cherrick Asks for Increased
Detroit Hebrew University Aid

Dr. Bernat'd Cherrick,
vice president of the Hebr-
ew University in Jerusa-
lem,. who was awarded the
honorary degree of Doctor
of Humane Letters by
Northern Michigan Univer-
sity in Marquette, Satur-
day, met with local associ-
ates of American Friends
of the Hebrew University
and urged increased cooper-
ation with the university,
support for scholarship fund-
ing and other activities.
Erwin Ziegelman, chair-
man of the Michigan Chap-
ter of American Friends of
the Hebrew University, and
Mrs. Ziegelman hosted a re-
ception for Dr. Cherrick on
Monday evening.
Addressing some 50 asso-
ciates of the chapter, Dr.
Cherrick appealed for in-
creased support for the uni-
versity. He said that the
government support has
been reduced, that the uni-
versity must raise $60 mil-
lion from friends abroad to
carry on its services and
that scholarships contrib-
uted by American Jews are
vital to the needs of the uni-
versity.
David Koren, Midwest di-
rector of the Hebrew Uni-
versity's American Friends,
announced a number of cul-

Goldwater Kin
Flees Rhodesia

JOHANNESBURG—Jur-
ick Goldwasser, former
mayor of Bulawayo and a
distant cousin of Sen. Barry
Goldwater (R-Ariz.), has
fled - Rhodesia and applied
for political asylum in
neighboring Botswana.
The permanent secretary
for the Botswana presi-
dent's office said, "He is
here, he has made an appli-
cation and in due course it
will be considered. As far
as we are concerned he is a
refugee."
Goldwasser flew in his
single-engine private plane
to Botswana. He told local
air traffic controllers in Bot-
swana he had an electrical
fault and was landing there.
Meanwhile, Rhodesian
Jews have protested a wide-
ly circulated quote from an
unnamed housing official,
who, commenting on the
country's discriminatory
zoning laws, said the stat-
utes "can apply only to
dogs, people of Jewish de-
scent...and so on."
The uproar was such that
Rhodesian Prime Minister
Ian Smith told a news con-
ference recently that "I
was taken aback." But he
added, "The legal position
has always been in Rho-
desia that if anybody wants
to put restrictive clauses in,
they can."

total meetings to be con-
ducted by the Michigan
chapter of American
Friends. He announced the
appointment of Goldie
Eskin as director of Hebr-
ew University activities in
the Greater Detroit area.
Dr. Mayer Subrin report-
ed to the gathering that he
and Mrs. Subrin are leaving
for Israel Sunday with a
group of American psy-
chiatrists to participate in
the dedication of the Sig-
mund Freud psychiatric de-
partment at the Hebrew
University. The ceremony
will be held in the univer-
sity amphitheater on the
Mount Scopus campus on
Aug. 29. In attendance at
the convocation and the sev-
eral functions that were hos-
ted by Sam Cohodas, North-
em Michigan Jewish lead-
er, were Dr. and Mrs. Wil-
liam Haber, Erwin ,
Ziegelman, Dr. and Mrs. ,'
Maxwell Hoffman, Mr. and
Mrs. Max Nosanchuck and
Nathan Rossen.
Dr. Cherrick was born in
Dublin, Ireland and edu-
cated in England. He re-
ceived his Master of Arts in
Semitic Languages and Phi-
losophy. He was a lecturer
at the London School Of Eco-
nomic and Political Sci-
ence. Shortly after he re-
ceived his Doctor of Divi-
nity from the Liverpool Tal-
mudic Institute.
He served as chief rabbi
at a synagogue in London.
At the outbreak of World
War II he became a chap-
lain in the British Army,
where he was cited for ex-
traordinary achievements.
Upon his discharge from
military service, he became
director of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund and the United
Palestine Appeal of Great
Britain.
In 1947, the year before
rael became an independ-

A word about Farm Maid Yogurt.

We tried, but we couldn't do it! The laboratory
technicians at Farm Maid have been trying for
months to come up with a Kosher yogurt.
However, to date, we have not been able to
produce a high quality yogurt without gelatin.
Consequently, this remains our only non-

Kosher product! We won't give up: we're still
working on it! Meanwhile, enjoy our other 38
varieties of strictly Kosher milk products,
available throughout Michigan.
