Total Petroleum Investigating
Charge-Slip Defacement

Defacing of Total Petro-
leum charge slips with anti-
Israel and anti-Jewish
markings led to an expo-
sure similar to the one that
involved Blue Cross.
In the instance of Blue
Cross, a defaced Jewish Na-
tional Fund check was
brought to the attention of
Blue Cross officials, who im-
mediately conducted a
search for the culprit. The
guilty employee was
promptly discharged. (See
story in last week's Jewish
News.)
In the instance of Total,
according to Richard H. Lo-
benthal, director of the
local office of the Anti-De-

JNF Certificates
for Rosh Hashana

In keeping with the Jew-
ish National Fund program
of reclaiming and securing
Israel's borders. Michigan
JNF President Mark E.
Schlussel urges the planting
of trees in Israel, for which
special tree certificates will
be used as New Year greet-
ings. •
The JNF- office is now ac-
cepting single orders or pre-
ferred lists, and issuing and
mailing tree certificates as
New Year greetings. -
Schlussel said. "this will
make your greetings more
meaninful, and will help
strengthen that state of Is-
rael. They will be double
greqings to your friends
and to Israel."
This year one may plant
the trees in the Jerusalem
Reunited Forest, dedicated
by the JNF to the planting
of a green perimeter of mil-
lion of trees around the
Holy City, in order to unify
it physically, and bring life
to a region which has been
wasteland for many years.
To order New Year tree
certificates. write the Jew-
ish National Fund. 22100

Israel Army Survey Requested

TEL AVIV (JTA)Defense
Minister Ezer Weizman has
named Gen. Yisrael Tal
(Res.), the developer of Is-
rael's tank corps, to survey

famation League of Bnai
Brith, Total Petroleum has
been very co-operative in in-
vestigating the defacement
with a swastika of the
charge slip of Rabbi M.
Robert Syme of Temple Is-
rael.
Total officials believe the
defacement was made by ei-
ther an employee already
discharged for pilfering, or
by another discharged em-
ployee. Total is reviewing
previous credit cards filled
out by both suspects to com-
pare the handwriting and
thus narrow down which of
the two was, in fact, the
defacer. Both suspects are
white adult males.
Interestingly, the in-
vestigation has turned up
four other swastika deface-
ments, not one of which
was reported to Total or
the ADL.
Mrs. Syme had reported
that the Total station man-
ager where the credit pur-
chase was made had ap-
peared indifferent to the
matter when it was brought
to his attention. Total man-
agement. in turn, report-
edly "severly repr-
emanded- the manager for
his indifference, and he was
advised in "no uncertain
terms" that Total considers
the defacement matter to
be extremely serious, and
his behavior to have been
unacceptable.
