MOST IMPORTANT part
of folks going to the P'Jazz
Concerts Monday and
Wednesday nights on the
Poolside Terrace of Hotel
Pontchartrain is that they
all have a good time...The
crowds are always tre-
mendous both from attend-
ance standpoint and orderly
good looks...so many nice,
polite young folks.
Certainly it isn't the
music...One night, Ramsey
Lewis refused to play be-
cause of the piano not being
in accordance with his con-
tract...Good thing he never
lived in an era of the old-
timers who played on. and
still do, anything that made
music...Most of the people
didn't even miss him!
Certainly it wasn't for the
Duke Ellington Band led by
his son Mercer Ellington in
a loud, frantic mutilation
that literally would have
the Duke turning over in
his grave...The fellows
were good in their own
way...but it wasn't the way
of Duke Ellington and his
men of yesteryears like
Juan Tizol, Lawrence
Brown, Barney Bigard,
Johnny Hodges, Harry Car-
ney, etc...Songs written to
melt in your ear were
blasted out... "Sophisticated
Lady", "Mood Indigo'', "In
A Sentimental Mood" and
others... "Caravan" was
hardly recognizable, and

"I've Got It Bad And That
Ain't Good - was sung very
much unlike the way it
should be.

But the Duke Ellington
band tried...and those who
didn't know the difference
probably never cared...A
strange thing possessed us,
however...If it is called the
Duke Ellington band, why
isn't son Mercer, using
dad's opening and closing
theme song, "Take The 'A'
Train?"

The
band
worked
hard...and let's say they
were doing a job...certainly
not a la the great Duke El-
lington groups we used to
know throughout the
years...with their fantastic
arrangements.
P'Jazz achieves its pur-
pose though...It brings guys
'n gals together and in a
most congenial way for an
evening of good time...
The people came in
droves on this night even
though the- threat of rain
was in the air...When the
water torrents did come
down in buckets, everybody
scurried for cover but re-
turned outside to enjoy the
atmosphere of happiness.
"Who is that guy in the
shirt sleeves wiping up the
chairs and tables?" some-
body asked after the
rain...Her partner couldn't
answer...but it was Ole
Christiansen, Chuck Muer's
food and beverage director
for Hotel , Pontchart-
rain...Ole out there working
his rear off is indicative of
this man...He'll never ask
anyone to do anything he
wouldn't do himself...that's
why everybody at Hotel
Pontchartrain likes and re-
spects him so much.

real...a pizza in 15 seconds,
take a few... Comes in one
size, four different
ways...for individual eat-
ing...a real fast food threat
to the usual standbys.
The new Pizza Station
was opened last week by
Little Caesar's on Tele-
graph between 10 and 11
Mile...There's also spaghet-
ti, a veal parmigiana sand-
wich and small delights
that look like French fries
but are more a deep-fried
dough.
Little Caesar owner Mike
Ilitch says he had the fast
food pizza idea eight or
nine years ago, but the com-
puterized system didn't
work outr ..Two years ago,
he , fiddled around with
something different and
after 000dles of experiment-
ing hours, it has become an
unbelievable reality...new,
different and most unique.
Folks may go inside and
order...or do so from the
car outside.

TWO OTHER MEMBERS

of Nightflight at Northfield
Hilton's Hurley's, plus song-
stress Liz Lachman, are
community-ites...Michael
Hepner, pianist, is son of
Lisa and Joel Hepner...and
Mark Pasman, bass guitar-
ist, is the son of Joan and
Robert Pasman.

WOULD YOU BE-
LIEVE...that there are still

people who bring their own
tea bags into restaurants
and just order hot water?
