AMI August 4,1977 _Jo Our New Neighbors: In this paper over the years you may have read some of our announcements about coming to West Bloomfield, breaking ground, starting construction, etc. We made some pretty strong statements about what we would and would not do. We lived up to those statements in every way and feel quite proud at having done so. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you who we are and what we stand for. Our Temple was founded in 1966 by seven families, and although we are still a young and struggling congregation we are,250 families strong. On this point of size let us pause. Our by-laws clearly state that we may have no more than 300 families. Temple Kol Ami very strongly feels that particularly today in an age of too rapidly di minishingpersonal identity, that our Temple always retain the member-to-member and Rabbi-to-mem- ber identification and communication that we now enjoy. Here also, it is the avowed policy of Temple Kol Ami that we are concerned structurally with an ADEQUATE facility. We built monuments with social action, try to instill in our children a true understanding of Judaism thru a study of Torah, a practice of Talmud, and with a moral commitment to our fellow man. We hope our monuments will be those of spirit, not of bricks and mortar. ti A word about our Rabbi. Rabbi Ernst 'Conrad is in the truest biblical sense a scholar and a teacher. A religious teacher, moral teacher, ethics teacher and more to us as congregants ... he is quite simply ... our friend. Temple Kol Ami enjoys a good rgix of young marrieds with no children, couples with children of all ages, and those whose children are grown with families of their Own. All temples have these-types of members. Temple Kol Ami wants, needs, desires, and gets the daring and exuber- ance of youth, the-steadfastness and dedication of those with children and the wisdom and experience of our older congre'gants. We all ... at all ages, are not just members we are participants. - - Temple Kol Ami is a liberal Reform Temple. Social action is at the heart of Judaism and therefore Temple Kol Ami is proud of its record. Like Avis, we're trying harder. Do not be misled into thinking we are a grim group. Nothing could be further from the truth. From the pulpit to the pews, to our many parties, joy and laughter abound. This Sunday, we're having a party. Non-members who may wish to know more about us are welcome. If you are one of the above . . . give us a call. We would love to have you join us. A spokesman for the American group called Lev Tzion (Heart of Zion), said it had been started six months ago and now includ- es 25 adult members pre- pared to settle in adminis- tered areas. Lev Tzion was described as sponsored by the Reli- gious Zionists of America and co-sponsored by Emu- nim-USA, the support group in this country for Israel's Gush Emunim settlement movement. Lev Tzion intends to begin a settlement at Shi- loah. Its members were de- scribed as religiously-in- clined and intending to in- corporate traditional tenets into an economic plan based on American-style technology and farming. At the request of Finance MiniAter Simha Ehrlich it was re- ferred to committee which will re-submit it - to the ple- num later for the required final readings. The voting was character- ized by a sharp split be- tween the two major opposi- tion factions, the Labor Alignment and the Demo- cratic Movement for Change. The DMC cast its 15 votes with the govern- ment coalition. The budget envisages an IL 4 billion deficit despite sharp cuts in government expenditures, including an IL 1.4 billion slash in the de- fense budget. Ehrlich insist-. ed that the army's fighting ability would not be affect- ed :by the cut. He said the budget took into account the sub- stitution of the value added tax (VAT) for the sales tax, a change that he claimed would yield double the reve- nue this year. Labor Alignment econo- mist Adi Amoral criticized the budget .for its cuts in government construction.
