Begin.'s Holocaust Day Ideas Hit by Yad Vashem's Hausner JERUSALEM (JTA)— Premier -Menahem Begin's suggestion that Holocaust Remembrance Day should from now on be in- corporated into the Tisha B'Av observances drew fire from Gideon Hausner of the Independent Liberal Party who charged it was an at- tempt to confuse two trage- dies in JeWish history. Hausner, the chairman of the Yad - Vashem 'Memorial Authority, said Begin's pro- posal would lead to the dis- appearance of the remem- brance of both the Holocaust and the- heroism _ of the ghetto fighters and partisans. Hausner explained that Tisha B'Av falls during the summer school recess when there is no opportunity to teach school children about the Holocaust and hold me- morial services in which they can participate. The present Holocaust Remem- brance Day falls right after the Passover recess. Begin responded that Tisha B'Av has tradition- 'ally been the day on which the Jewish people marked other major tragedies in their history, despite the fact that it was the day of destruction of the Second Temple. "The sages had done so because they realized that there was a limit to the number of mourning dates our people could observe," Begin said. He suggested that the incorporation of one remembrance day into the other- would emphasize the destruction of the Jew- ish people both in ancient and modern times. "This would make Tisha B'Av a special day for all Jewish people," Begin said. He suggested, that the in- corporation of one remem- brance day into the other would emphasize the de- struction of the Jewish people-both in ancient and modern times. "This would make Tisah B'Av a special day for all Jewish people," Begin said. He reported that both Is- rael Chief Rabbis, Ovadia Yosef and Shlomo Goren, as well as Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik of Boston, ap- proved of his idea. Zionist Leader to TeaCh in Israel LONDON (JTA)—Dr. Isaiah Friedman, one of the foremost historians of the Zionist movement, will take a post in Israel in the au- tumn aftet working for a number of years in Britain and the United States. He will be the visiting re- search professor at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, where he will teach modem Jewish history and carry out research into the late David Ben-Gurion's rela- tions with the British gov- ernment and the Arabs. Friedman, formerly of Dropsie College, Phila- delphia, is also the author of a forthcoming volume, "Germany, Turkey and Zi- onism 1897-1918." His. best known work is "The Ques- tion of Palestine, 1914-1918, British-Jewish-Arab Rela- tions." JERUSALEM (JTA) Faye Schenk of New York and Philip Granovsky of To- ronto, co-chairmen of the Keren Hayesod-United Is- rael Appeal, are in Israel for a series of meetings re- lated–to KH activities in the next few -months that will launch its 1978 campaign.
