NEW ISSUE OF - Meet,

Eat and Enjoy Detroit will
be out in October...again
written by Mary Conway
and Hdrry Satchwell...The
version will not only in-
clude menus of good places
to eat, but also a "gong"
listing of not-so-hot spots ac-
cording to the
writers...Some of the places
will surprise many...But
few people eat at more
places than Mary and
Harry...and this is their
opinion...It'Il also have ce-
lebrity recipes (guess what-
-we're in it with a delicious
veal dish...refuting all
claims that the only thing
we can cook are boiled
eggs)...plus sections on vari-
ous types of eateries, ethnic
and otherwise.

SMALLEST DELICATES-
SEN in town is "Harry's

Mile Rd. in Farrell's
Plaza...We had a corned
beef and Russian dressing
on purhpernickel in the
bright, cheerful-looking 10-
seater...May be small, but
has one of the largest
carry-out set ups around.
from sandwiches to appeti-
zers to full dinners...The
beautiful new Fountainb-
loom Room now seats
120...but ground is expected
to be broken for a 250-seat-
er.
MANY FOLKS WILL re-
member Frank Gee, owner
of the new Wah-Mee Chi-
nese restaurant on Middle-
belt and Ann Arbor
Trail...He was chef and
owner of Detroit's Chinese
Village on Livernois for
about 25 years or more...He
made a fine white fish...still
does, we under-
stand...Frank does the kitch-
en and also has wife Big
Wun (4'9") in the kitchen
with him...something few
thought she'd ever do.
Wah-Mee is a -real family
affair...Plus mom and pop,
all six children, ranging
from ages 9 to 22, work
there...Three daughters are
waitresses, other two host-
ess and cashier...and their

A TOTAL GREEK EXPERIENCE!

little 9-year-old son is a
Jack-of-all-trades, strutting
around in his tiny red jack-
et.
NOW THAT
Michael
Goodman is . a dinner-thea-
ter manager, he can look
more closely at the things
best for the customers out
front...In the past eight
months, Mick has opened
up three of them...the first
two as , a producer.
His initial managerial
shot is - at Alvaro's on 14
Mile and Crooks...with the
presentation of "A Thurber
Carnival"...Downstairs at
Alvaro's has been trans-
formed into the dinner-thea-
ter on Fridayand Saturday
evenings, with tasty food
and enough space to seat
about 160 if necessary.
- A Thurber Carnival" is
made up of vignettes from
James Thurber short store-
is and cartoons...with the
cast of five plus two musi-
cians doing a fine job good
enough to make tolks ig-
nore- the distraction of
music and dancing over-
head...The players make it
a fast-moving, well-paced
comedy of healthy laugh-
ter...with simple props back-
ed by a rear projector
screen of clever slides.
Most appreciated other
than the show was plenty of
leg room and a cloth napkin
to go with cloth tablecloth.
ERRATA...Jakks
on
Greenfield and 10 Mile will
not be open for dinners Sun-
days until Sept. 11.
DATE IS AUG. 22...for
start of dancing to the big
band sound...at Topinka's
Country House on Tele-
graph and Seven Mile
Rd...in its "new look" and
"new be
music of yesterday and
today to Matt Michaels

vibes.
"JAZZ IS BACK" surges
- everywhere as Port Hole
Lounge next to Sail Inn on
Telegraph and 10 Mile joins
the big sweep with a Jazz
Jam every Monday nite,
8:30-12:30...George Benson
on sax; Terry Pollard,
piano; Bert Myrick, drums;
and Ron Brooks, bass...The
group, formerly known as
Showerman's Band, is now
George Benson Quar-
tet...The fun nite includes
other musicians coming
and sitting in on the Mon-
day jams.
ONLY RESTAURANT we
know of that is delaying its
opening rather than speed-
ing things up is Tunnel Bar-
B Q...flinging doors open
very soon on Northwestern
and 12 Mile...It's taking
longer than expected be-
cause of such precision
exacting to make sure
everything is according to
the famed and most success-
ful Windsor operation.
OPENING SUNDAYS for
Detroit Lions football sea-
son was so successful that
Rip's is now open -for the
games 4 to 8 p.m....on M-59,
a block west of Tele-
graph...and three miles
from the Pontiac Silver-
dome...Owner, Singing John
Humphries, is evening host
weekly and son Bruce is
daytime boss.
