An employee who defaced
a Jewish National Fund
check was discharged by
Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Michigan.
The cancelled check con-
tained marginal anti-Semi-
tic, and anti-Israel notations
propagated for the PLO.
When the JNF director,
Percy Kaplan, discovered
the insulting notations he
called it to the attention of
The Jewish News and the
Anti-Defamation League.
Their protests were accom-
panied by intercessions by
Irving Bluestone, the UAW
leader, Reuben Isaacs and
others who asked. for an in-
vestigation.
The bank branch through
which the check
was
cleared proved that the
check was defaced when
the bank received it from
Blue Cross.
Franz Topol, vice presi-
dent for corporate affairs
at Blue Cross, said a com-
pany investigation identi-
fied a Blue Cross employee
as the culprit. The employ-
ee was suspended for three
days while the investigation
was completed and then
was fired.
Topol said the incident ap-
peared to be an isolated ac-
tion and said that Blue
Cross has a corporate pol-
icy of "total nontolerance"
toward objectionable ac-
tions of this kind. He said
-Blue Cross is continuing its
investigation of the in-
cident.
