The fund was established through contributions of Prof. Keyfitz' widow, Dr. Sara Feder-Keyfitz. and family, and will be used to further studies in the an- cient cultures of the Middle East in which Prof. Keyfitz was an authority. The execution was the climax of Stalin's terror campaign to eliminate all vestiges of Jewish culture in the - Soviet Union. The execution of the Jew- ish writers took place one month after a trial in which they were accused by the government of being "enemies of the USSR, agents of the American im- perialism and bourgeois na- tionalist Zionists." Between 1948 and 1952, 431 outstanding Jewish art- ists were arrested. They in- cluded 217 writers, 108 actors, 87 artists and 19 mu- sicians. Most of the prison- ers died in Soviet labor camps.
