shoots and spinach.
Now came the main en-
tree ... and an elegant one,
too ... very delicious
Salmon Steak Teriyaki ,
filet of salmon served on a
platter that included the
roots of rhubarb dipped in
ginger to cleanse the mouth
for this very fine dish.
For dessert, we tasted
Frieda's fresh strawberries
which are dipped in sour
cream and then brown
sugar ... If it is a Japanese
dish, our mom has her coun-
tries mixed up ... She's
been giving us strawberries
and sour cream since we
first learned what a spoon
was for ... Brother Mary
has been using brown sugar
on things long before, people
knew there even was such
a thing. —
However, our dessert was
the best ... and certainly a
rare treat ... Green Tea Ice
Cream ... No one in Detroit
could supply it, so Steve
and Kuno gave Stroh's the
recipe for them to make
this excellent ice cream ex-
clusively for Mikado.
Certainly we • all had
green tea ... and everyone
but Frieda enjoyed a good
. cigar ... not that she didn't
accept when offered one.
The delicate, balanced na-
ture of Mikado's environ-
ment extends to its menu ...
Spices and sauces are used
to enhance the food, not to
overwhelm it ... And since
a guest feasts with both the
palate and the eye, each en-
tree is served in a dis-
tinctive. dish ... Rice is pre-
sented in a chawan (rice_
bowl) and served with a
shamofi (a porcelain spoon)
... Tempura arrives at the
table in a bamboo basket.
After dinner, we were in-
vited to visit the other
rooms ... In the Japanese
tradition, guests are asked
to take off their shoes be-
fore entering the tatami
room and place them in a
special storage slot ... They
then enter the room in
stocking feet and if desired,
sit on a special two-inch
thick tatami rug ... Each
dining room is secluded by
an opaque "shoji" screen,
which makes the tatami
rooms Detroit's most pri-
vate dining experience ...
Some of the tatami rooms
feature a tokonoma, a re-
cessed area within the wall
containing a simple fresh
flower arrangement ...
Each room is striking in its
simplicity.
The steak tables are a re-
cent innovation in Japanese
cooking ... Up to seven
guests can sit around a
steak table, which contains
a large burner at its center
... The steaks and fresh ori-
ental ingredients are
brought to the' table where
a kimono-clad server pre-
pares the food to the
guest's preference ... Prepa-
ration of the meal is enter-
