It's true—at least at the Hotel Plaza in the Renais- sance Center ... In fact, ac- cording to Kuno Fasel, as- sistant executive head and food and beverage director, on the weekends you can hardly walk around. there are so many people ... Even between one and three in the morning. says Kuno. The Detroit Plaza and Renaissance Center are cer- tainly fairylands come true for the City of Detroit ... Everywhere inside is a veri- table "out of this world" land of fantasy ... People are all over ... in the lob- bies, cocktail lounges, din- ing rooms. escalators, eleva- tors, etc. The Renaissance Center is the greatest thing to hap- pen to Detroit ... there's ab- solutely nothing like it in the world. Our latest nitery trek was to the recently- opened Mi- kado, a very gracious, very authentic Japanese restau- rant and newest addition to the impressive list of ea- teries at the Detroit Plaza. We were highly im- pressed by the Mikado's pri- vate entrance off Renais- sance Drive South (on the river side of Renaissance Center) and its own person- al doorman. Mikado is the first ethnic restaurant run solely *by Western International ... Un- like its others (Yamato's at Century Plaza in L.A., Tra- der Vic's, etc.) this is com- pletely a "house - oper- ation. It combines the delicate balance of Japanese cuisine and decor with western- style comfort ... concentra- tion on fresh foods and new items, many of which are shipped by air freight from the West Coast ... plus color control. Everything is served with a separate dish ... and each one, many hand painted, are a different design and color. The pretty waitresses with obi wrapped around their colorful kimonos are naturally most gracious ... but above this, the eye can 8470 N. TELEGRAPH, 1/2 BIk. S. of Joy Rd. Many western world waitresses would do well just to go and learn how to smile. About 70 percent of the help at Mikado are Japa- nese ... the rest. Korean and Chinese ... with perhaps some other oriental blood tossed in. Frieda and ourselves had dinner with Kuno and his as- sistant. Steve Lee, food and beverage manager, who leaves this month ... and so many will be sorry to see him go ... to take over at the new Western Inter- national hotel being built in Hawaii. There are three dining rooms to choose from, each with its own distinctive decor and service ... The traditional Japanese tatami room featuring recessed seating areas where guests dine at floor level tables wh5' their feet are in a "N,veit" and they sit on back- ed chairs without legs An- other room holds the more modern steak tables, at which food is prepared in front of the guest ... The third room contains stand- ard western-style seating ... Tableside hibachi-style cook- ing is available in the stand- ard and tatami rooms ... In addition, there's a separate cocktail lounge with bar ... In all, Mikado seats about 245 people. However, our first visit was not to any of these rooms ... Rather, the four of us became the first per- sons to use a small private dining room just opened. We all started out with a good luck toast ... to the clinking glasses of delicious Japanese plum wine. Hot napkins were brought to us rolled in a bamboo holder ... and we each pick- ed up our chop sticks to begin a session of gracious dining. First dish brought was Sashimi ... raw fish (tuna), which we dipped in a sauce of soy, mustard. Japanese radish and onion ... The sound of raw fish is not ap- petizing to many. and Frieda never thought she'd live to see the day her din- ing adventures would in- clude raw fish ... But she ate more than one helping ... not that it was the polite thing to do, but because the raw fish was good. Next came something not on the menu but which can be ordered ... truly a gour- met combination plate of very tasty beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura. More plum wine and an- other toast. Then we had Chowan Mushi ... a steamed egg cus- tard soup with chicken, shrimp, chopped fish, mush- rooms, green onions and ori- ental vegetables ... served in the China pot that is put into boiling water to cook. One of our very charming and most delightful wait- resses placed a cast iron hi- bachi made in Japan espe- cially for Mikado, at our table ...
