Tennessee Orthodox Synagogue Ruined in Sabbath Explosion
i.
NEW YORK (JTA)—
After their small synagogue
in Chattanooga, Tenn. was
destroyed by an explosion
on unconfirmed origin last
Friday night, congregants
rummaged through the
ruins Saturday morning col-
lecing undamaged prayer
books and the two Torah
scrolls and conducted Sha-
bat services as usual, on
the porch of the house next
door, Rabbi Meir Stimler of
the Beth Shalom synagogue
said.
Jewish leaders there have
said that they believe the
explosion was caused by a
bomb because wires were
found leading from the syna-
gogue to a motel 100 yards
away. However, local po-
lice and Federal agents in-
vestigating the origin of the
explosion have declined to
confirm it was a bombing,
until they get the results
from laboratory tests.
Stimler clarified an ear-
lier report from _Steven
Drysdale, executive direc-
for if the Chattanooga Jew- the Friday evening Shabat
ish Welfare Federation, services were saved be-
that suggested that the __cause they . left the syna-
lives of the congregants at gogue early, being two

Begin Charms Z. Brzezinski
WASHINGTON = Men-

Newsweek magazine during
Begin's recent visit to Wash-

New Settlement
Founded in Gaza
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The
cornerstone of a new settle-
ment was laid in the Raffah
salient last week in the pres-

recent immigrants from
South Africa.
Neither the government

sented at the ceremonies
and Agriculture Minister
Ariel Sharon, who had
promised to attend, sent a
message of greeting in-
stead.
The new settlement, to be
known as. Talmei-Joseph,

zinski's efforts to impose
preconditions for peace on
Israel.
"But Begin got off to a
rousing start with Brze-
zinski when he put his arm
around him and said, 'I
have something for you.'
"Begin thereupon present-
ed him with copies of four
letters Brzezinski's father
had written to German au-
thorities protesting the
treatment of Jews in Leip-
zig, where he was serving
as Polish Consul in 1933.
Begin had ordered aides
to search for the letters at

morial to the Holocaust.

people short of a minyan.
Stimler_said the congrega-
tion had finished services
and had left the building by
a 8 p.m., which is always
the case with or without a
minyan. The bombing re-
portedly occurred at about
8:50 p.m.
All that remained stand-
ing of the 55-family Ortho-
dox_ synagogue, a one story
converted house, was part
of the roof over the
1N-6-men's section and the
ark, where the Torah
scrolls are kept. Stimler,
who lives in the house next
door to the synagogue
where services were held
Saturday morning ; said the
synagogue would be rebuilt,
but as yet, there are no esti-
mates of the damages.
