TEMPLE KOL AMI
What is a Temple? I recently had the need to
answer that question in reference to our par-
ticular Temple.
On the surface, it would appear to be a
relatively simple question. Answered by a the-
ological description with a historical back,-
ground. However, I knew the question present-
ed to me was a specific one, "What is your
Temple?" My questioner knew what a Temple
was and I assumed they wanted to know if we
were different and if so what made us different
or "unique" if you will.
I initiated my answer by ticking off several
points such as: we are small; 250 families, and
by our constitution cannot go over 300 fami-
lies; we have few sermons, but gather after
services to discuss various topics; our building
which is adequate, is not a monument of bricks
and mortar, but one of spirit, dedicated and
built on membership involvement and good
deeds; that fortunately for us we enjoy a mem-
ber to member, and Rabbi to member commu-
nication; I went on to elaborate about our
cornucopia of Social events; the devotion to
excellence and creation of excitement in our
Religious School, and although never done,
our accomplishments in Social Community ac-
tion.
I tried, but I did not feel that I was truly
explaining our uniqueness.
I've given it considerable thought -We are
not a Temple, oh yes,- in the theological and
historical sense we certainly are, but much
more so, we are a family. Like a family, we
argue and disagree, but like a family, we love
and respect each other.
Today, maybe more than ever, all of us need
a true sense of belonging, and identification, a
communication, we need to be individuals, not
just another name.
Yes, by golly, we _are unique or different
because that's the way we feel, and that is
different.
Our Family is getting together for a party.
We would love to have you join us.
