Depicts U.S., Israel Roles

JERUSALEM — Hebrew
University President Avra-
ham Harman opened an ex-
hibition at the Jewish _Na-
tional and Uni-
versity Li-
brary on the
Givat Ram
campus mark-
ing the cente-
nary of the
birth of the
university's
Magnes first
chan-
cellor, later president,
Judah Leib Magnes.
Open; to the public for the
past three weeks, the exhibi-
tion provides a documen-
tary and photographic re-
cord of Magnes' varied and
often stormy career as
rabbi in both the Reform
and Conservative move-
ments in the U.S., as the
main architect and leader
of the New York Kehilla Or-
ganization, as one of the
founders of the "Joint", as
a pacifist during the Firgt
World War, and finally, as
the leader of the Hebrew
University of -Jerusalem
from its opening to his
death in 1948.
Dr. Aryeh Goren, whose
book "New York Jews and
the Quest for Community:
the Kehilla Experiment,
1908-1922" deals with the
New York kehilla, spoke at
the opening of the exhibi-
tion, which was attended by
many veteran university
faculty . members b and ad-

French Protest
Rightist Attack

PARIS (JTA) — Several
hundred demonstrators pro-
tested last week against the
recent attack on the "Move-
ment Against--Racism and
Anti-Semitism" (MRAP)
and three of its attorneys.
Representatives of the
French Bar Association, the
Union of Magistrates and
the Association for Civic
Liberties were among the
demonstrators who gat ,.
ered in front of the MRAP
offices.
The organization's Paris
headquarters were dam-
aged by an explosion last
week. The following night,
July 15, bombs exploded
near the homes of three at-
torneys working for MRAP.
There were no Anjuries and
the police have no known
clues as to the identity of
the assailants.
The MRAP is a pro-left
organization active in the
fight against anti-Semitism
and racism. Far to the left
of the better known League
Against Racism and Anti-
Semitism (LICA), it is espe-
cially detested by extreme-
right wing and neo-Nazi
groups.

Israel Evaluating
British Jet Engine

WASHINGTON — Sweden
and Israel are reportedly
evaluating a Rolls Royce
jet engine for future air-'
craft applications.
According to Aviation
Week and Space Tech-
nology magazine, Israel Air-
craft Industries has asked
for data on the engine. The
magazine said among the
possible uses by Israel
would be using the Rolls en-
gine in an advanced fighter
designed to replace the Kfir
jet in the late 1980s.

tribute to Magnes' ability to
build bridges of under-
standing and cooperation be-
tween very different
people—thus he had led a
protest march through the
streets of New York in 1905
which had drawn to its
ranks the veteran„ "aristo-
cratic" up-town Jews, and
the new immigrants from
Europe who were then
crowding into the Lower
East Side. He had also weld-
ed these elements into the
kehilla organization and
was largely instrumental in
the setting up of the, Ameri-
can Jewish Committee.

Magnes was an ardent Zion-
ist—after Jacob Schiff had
written a letter to him
saying that he would only
support the establishment
of the Technion if it could
be ensured that it would re-
main free of Zionist in-
fluence and that he ob-
jected to "the endeavor to
instill into American citi-
zens of the Jewish faith the
notion that we are still a na-
tion, or should seek to- be-
come one . . ."
Magnes replied (in ,1909).
"I can conceive of no per-
manent difficulty arising be-
tween American citizenship
on the one hand and Zion-
ism, or Judaism on the
other hand. Should such dif-
ficulty arise, however, I am
free to say that I should,
without heitation, cast my
lot with Zionism." He had,
said Dr. Goren, a profound
sense of the university of
Jewish ethics and always
tried to explain this to
others and live his life hi ac-
cordance with this belief."
