its economic structure and
commenced a new in-
tensive phase of devel-
opment.
Spektor said this year
was "the most successful
year yet for tourism to Is-
rael from this area."
He predicts a big year for
tourism from Michigan to
Israel and said that El Al
has increased its pro-
motional efforts, especially
in the Christian pilgrimage

Summarizing El Al's
world wide activities in
1976-77, Ami Spektor, El
Al's district manager for
Michigan, reported that El
Al wound up with a modest
net profit of $280,000 corn-
' pared to the $1.2 millior
deficit of last year.
Total operating profit in-
creased to a record $5.8 mil-
lion compared to $1.8 mil-
lion last year. Total income
increased 28 percent to
$257.2 million. Passengers
increased 30.4 percent to
964.500 at a 67.3 factor load
factor (65.1 last year).

Cargo loads increased
30.5 percent to 32,000 tons
plus an additional 23,000
tons of agricultural produce
flown in a separate oper-
ation to West Germany.
Overall
load
factor
reached 65.6 percent corn-
pared to 60.5 percent in
1975-76. An important fea-
ture in the 1976-77 results is
the decrease of 1.5 percent
in production costs, first in
six years. (All other air-
lines registered a 3.7 per
cent increase in production
costs).
During 1976-77 El Al suc-
cessfully put into operation
its 747 convertible passen-
ger/cargo and completed a
five-year development plan
which calls for the pur-
chase of four Boeing 747's.
The first one, a cargo type,
has already been delivered.

ing to American University
professor H.H.A. Cooper,
who testified last week be-
fore the Senate Judiciary
Committee.
Cooper said terrorism is
a "growth industry - even
though incidents appear to
be waning. "I would expect
attacks by terrorists on
power stations, oil refi-
neries and other sensitive
targets" in the future, he
added.
"The resort to soulless
violence we call terrorism
requires a peculiar, person-
al committment that is com-
plex and intricate in its gen-
esis...Neither politics nor
ideology make terrorists;
they are only ration-
alizations for them," Coop-
er said.
He further testified that
biographical research stud-
ies "hint at a strong con-
nection between sex and ter-
rorism" but did not explain
the alleged link between the
two.
