adding four more golds to
their staggering numbers.
Three new Maccabia re-
cords were created by the
Natators, including one by
the 400 meter free-style
men relay team.
Mark Heinrich, of La
Jolla, California and the
U.S. Naval Academy, estab-
lished a new Maccabiah re-
cord in the men's 100-meter
backstroke. Lance Michaels
of Santa Clara, Calif. won
over Israel's Joel Kinde.
In the 800-meter free-
style relay, the American
team comprised of Heinr-
ich, Michael Saphir of Los
Altos, Calif., Hilary Berg-
man of Tuscaloosa, Ala.,
and Alan Fine took a gold
medal, which placed them
in the world's top 25 relay
teams for the distance.
In the women's swim-
ming events, Wendy Wein-
berg of Baltimore, a 1968
Olympic bronze medalist,
set a new record in the 400-
meter free-style.

Wendy Weinberg won the
800-meter free-style
women's event in record
time. Steven Pomerantz
took the gold in the men's
100-meter free-style.
Hilary Bergman tied
Mark Spitz's record of 6
gold medals in one meet
when he set a new record
in the 400-meter individual
medley. The 400-meter
women's medley relay unit
of Denanburg, Nathan, Bur-
ton and Weinberg smashed
Israel's old time set in 1973,
for the coveted gold medal-
ion.
Weinberg, with 6 gold and
3 silver medals, bettered
her 1973 mark of 4 gold and
3 silver.
The Americans were pre-
vented from a clean sweep
in the • swimming com-
petition by Anat Farkas, a
14-year-old Israeli who won
the women's 100-meter
breaststroke. But the Yanks
did take five of the six
events: Bergman won the
400-meter men's free-style;
Mark Gordin, of Cerritus,
Calif. took the 200-meter
breaststroke. Weinberg won
the women's 200-meter
free-style.
Gillian Peters, of Austral-
ia, triumphed over Lisa
Denaburg of the U.S. in the
100-meter backstroke with a
record-breaking time.
The runners and field
men dominated the track
events witnessed by 15,000
spectators. Dov Djerassi
broke his own 1973 distance
three times in ultimately
winning the hammer throw.
Jay Pushkin of Arizona, led
the USA in a sweep of the
discus event, in creating a
new games record.
Manny Rosenberg swept
to a scintillating win in the
200-meter sprint, and in the
400-meter hurdle event
John Citron came up with
his second win of the meet,
as Richard Rothschild beat
the field in the 1,500-meter
run. The USA male 4 x 100
relay quartet added to the
USA gold total with an easy
win.
Sharon Shapiro, a youns-
ter from Arleta, Calif. won
five gold medals in the
single and team gymnastics
and was hailed as the
"Nadia Commenici" of Jew-
ish gymnastics. She is a def-
inite starter for the U.S. in
the 1980 Mocscow Olym-
pics.
In the weight-lifting com-
petition, Michael Cohen, of
Savannah, Ga. took a gold
medal in the middleweight
division.
Ronald Krelstein of Ger-
mantown, Tenn., won a
gold medal for the' U.S. in
the 50-meter pistol shooting
to break his own 1973 Mac-
cabia record. In the free-
pistol event, the American
team scored 2091 points
against 2022 for the Israeli
team.
Americans scored a clean
sweep minthe sabre com-
petition with Edgar House
and Joel Glucksman, of

New York City, taking gold
and silver medals, and Rich-
ard Maxwell of Phila-
delphia, a bronze medal.
Michael Rohde, sole U.S.
entry in chess, a 17-year-old
world grand master, leads
the chess participants in his
field. Expert observers feel
Rohde is the future Bobby
Fischer and will be heard
from in the not too distant
future when he faces Rus-
sia's grand masters in the
big-time competition.
Although America's
water polo team defeated Is-
rael, the gold medal was
awarded to the hosts on the
basis of a complicated total
score basis. Jack. Abra-
mson, U.S. veteran water
events chairman, advised
the Maccabia organizing
committee that the USA
would not send water polo
teams to future Maccabiot
if Israel persisted in enter-
ing two teams.
As of earlier this week,
the host country, Israel, pur-
sues with 39 gold, 36 silver
and 36 bronze medals.
France is in third position,
followed closely by Holland,
Australia, Germany and
South Africa. The Ameri-
cans lead in medals won
with 61 gold, 48 silver and
29 bronze.

the Book of Books ... Maho-
