TR 5-0300 By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.) There is significant histor- ical background of the Fast of the Ninth of Av (Tisha b'Av—occuring this Sun- day). The Talmud (Taanit 26b) lists five tragic events that occurred on that day in the annals of Jewish history. The Divine decree announc- ing that the Israelites of the desert wandering period would not enter the Prom- ised Land themselves (only their children would) was is- sued on this day. Both the first and second Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed on that day. The ill-fated revolution of Betar would up in defeat and de- struction on that day. The city of Jerusalem was re- duced to shambles on that day. After hearing the reports of the scouts during their wander- ing in the desert, the Israel- ites began to wail and cry on that night, i.e., the night of Tisha b'Av (Taanit 29a, Numbers 14:1). It is also said that the expulsion of the Jews from Spain took place on the day of Tisha b'Av. A candle- light service will be held, highlighted by an exhibit en- titled, "The Holocaust: 1933-1945."
