Faith in Israel

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—At a
press conference in Tel
Aviv, Francis Rezick, politi-
cal adviser to the command-
er of Christian forces in
southern Lebanon said,
"The Christian world for-
sbok us in our darkest hour
of need; the state of Israel,
which is our avowed foe, is
our only hope."

`Israel Ready for Real Peace'
Golda Tells Closing ZOA Parley

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Golda
Meir warned the 3,000 dele-
gates attending the closing
session of the 80th annual
convention of the Zionist Or-
ganization of America that
the greatest danger facing
Israel is to promote an illu-
sion of peace when there is
no real peace.
genuine
want
"We
peace," she declared, "not
an illusory peace. And for a
genuine peace there is a
majority in Israel that is
ready to pay the price."
The former premier, who
was presented with the
WA's Theodor Herzl
Award by President Emph-
raim Katzir, recalled her
two meetings with Jimmy
Carter—one in 4972 when he
was governor of Georgia
and the other shortly before
his election. She expressed
belief that President Carter
is a friend of Israel and
that he genuinely wants
peace in the Middle East
and a safe and flourishing
Israel. '

Mrs. Meir also stressed
the need for aliya. She criti-
cized what she termed dan-
gerous statements by
friends and foes "who talk
of guarantees, international
or other. These will not pre-
vent another war. War can
be prevented only if Israel

is strong. At the same time,
a peace would not last if Is-
rael is not strong and se-
cure." She said the wars Is-
rael went through would be
justified only if they en-
sured the continuation of
Jewish existence.

During the convention,
Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan. )
said that he was "con-
vinced after my visit (to Is-
rael) that the Israeli govern-
ment wants to negotiate but
they don't want to say in ad-
vance what the conditions
will be." Dole made his re-
marks in an interview on
the Israel Radio after a
meeting with Premier Men-
ahem Begin.
The 1976 Republican Vice
Presidential nominee said
he did not blame the Is-
raelis for refusing to dis-
close their conditions for a
peace settlement before
talks begin.
In the- new administration
again to be headed by the
re-elected President Joseph
Sternstein, Dr. Sidney Leib
has been renamed presi-
dent of the Midwest Region.
In addition to the Detroiters
listed last week as mem-
bers of the new adminis-
tration, Dr. Lester Zeff was
named a member of the
ZOA's National Executive
Council.

British Liberal Thorpe Wants
EEC Embassies in Jerusalem

LONDON (JTA)—A sug-
gestion that Britain and
other European Economic
Community (EEC) coun-
tries should transfer their
embassies in Israel from
Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was
made here by Jeremy
Thorpe, MP, the Liberal
Party's spokesman for for-
e'gn affairs.
H e told a luncheon organ-
ized by Bnai Brith that
such a step could be taken
as a balancing gesture on
the next occasion that Brit-
ain, together with European
community nations, made
another statement calling
for a Palestinian state, such
as that issue at last
month's EEC summit. He
said his proposal had the
full agreement of David
Steel, the Liberal Party
leader.
Thorpe associated himself
with the anti-Arab boycott

bill introduced in the House
of Lords and said that the
British government should
immediately cease coopera-
ting with the Arab boycott
by refusing to give certifi-
cates of non-Israeli origin
to any British exports or re-
exports.

Referring to the Sunday
Times' allegations of tor-
ture by Israel, Thorpe said
that even if the paper's in-
vestigations were proved to
be true—"which I do not be-
lieve" —Israel's record
compared with almost
every other conqueror in
war "would stand as an ex-
ample of restraint and of
mercy."

At the end of his pre-
pared speech, Thorpe, who
is the patron of the Liberal
Friends of Israel, chastized
Anglo-Jewry for being "far
too sensitive" in its reac-
tion to criticism of Israel.
