Payne was honored July 13
by the Jewish War Veter-
ans, Department of Mich-
igan, for her outspoken
stand against her station's
handling of an interview
with U.S. Nazi leader Fred
Collins.
Ms. Payne was awarded

Memorial Home in South-
field, and she also received
a citation from the Allied
Veterans Council. •
A framed letter from Con-
gressman William Brod-

view occurred on WJBH's
11 p.m. news in mid June.
Collins' response to inter-
viewer Joe Glover was repl-
ete with anti-Jewish and
anti-black epithets.
Ms. Payne, who was at
home watching the broad-
cast, said she was out-
raged. "I couldn't believe
it," she said. "I tuned in
and heard that Nazi being
interviewed ... and not chal-
lenged in any way. I called
my news director and ques-
tioned him and I was told I
was just being too sensi-

tive."

Ms. Payne subsequently
resigned from the station
when no apology for the
broadcast was offered, but
recently rejoined the sta-
tion following an on-the-air
apology.
