Between Southfield & Evergreen (JTA )—The LONDON first legislation designed to combat the effects of the Arab boycott of Israel on British firms was in- troduced Tuesday in the House of Lords by Lord Byers, a leading Liberal peer. Supporters of the measure in both houses of Parliament predicted that it would eventually be adopted, but not without a long battle during which it will be strongly opposed by the pro-Arab lobby. As Parliament recesses shortly, the bill will have to be re-submitted at the next session in October. Arthur Bottomley, MP who is chair- man of the all-party Com- mittee to Combat Foreign Trade Boycotts, said that he believes the government privately welcomes the bill, which parallels legislation recently enacted in the United States and similar moves in France and Can- ada. MP Greville Janner, an- other member of the com- mittee, said the govern- ment would have to decide whether to grant the meas- ure debating time. An alter- native would be to put it in the hands of a select com- mittee. He said it has a good chance of success in the long run. The bill makes it an of- fense for any person to seek or provide information concerning another persons religion, racial or national origin, business connections or membership in or con- nection with any organiza- * Sea Tide Ends Beach Separation Urged by Orthodox NEW YORK—The Anti- Defamation League of Bnai Brith last week revealed that three American corpo- rations and two banks named last month by the Arab Boycott Committee as having submitted proof of compliance with anti-Israel boycott rules "were being used as innocent pawns in an Arab propaganda effort to counter the new U.S. anti-boycott law." All five firms—General Electric, General Motors, Westinghouse, Barclays Bank and Bank of Amer- ica—have informed ADL that they do pot discrimi- nate and that they maintain business relationships with both Israel and the Arab world. The responses came in an- swer to the agency's request for "what documen- tation, if any" had been sub- mitted to the Arab boycott office in exchange for not being blacklisted. It had been announced at the Arab Boycott Com- mittee conference in Alexan- dria, Egypt, that Barclays was removed from the blacklist and GE, GM, West- inghouse and Bank of Amer- ica would not be put on be- cause, following warnings, they had given proof of not having business ties with Is- rael. NEW YORK (JTA )—A long-standing controversy involving the legality and esthetics of a sexually seg- regated beach–was at least temporarily settled over the July Fourth weekend when the fences dividing the area were washed away by the tide barely two hours after they went up. The barrier was put up by a Long Beach Orthodox community with the approv- al of City Manager Lau- rence Farbstein to provide a special swimming area in accordance with strict Or- . thodox Jewish law. Despite criticism of the concept by city council members and Councilman Robert Leslie's charges that Farbstein was "cour- ting the Orthodox vote" and had acted illegally in grant- ing permission without the authorization of the city council, Farbstein main- tained that his actions were neither political nor illegal. He said he had consulted informally with members of the city council and had found almost unanimous ap- proval. Reform Rabbis Endorse Boycott New York (JTA )—The growing national consumer boycott against products made by the giant J: P. Ste- vens textile corporation re- ceived a significant boost when the Central Confer- ence of American Rabbis (CCAR), at its annual con- vention held at Grossinger, N.Y. June 23, voted unani- mously to endorse the boy- cott, it was reported by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Worker's Union, AFL-CIO, Canadian Labor Congress. The endorsement by the CCAR, the 1,300-member or- ganization of Reform rabbis in the U.S. and Canada, came in the form of a resolu- tion which urged "that the boycott of the J. P. Stevens Company products be sup- ported until such time as collective bargaining takes place in good faith"; and it "encouraged" members of the CCAR "to support and strengthen the Stevens boy- cott.' tion if such information is sought because of a trade boycott. It also requires those re- ceiving a boycott request or demand, to report it to the Trade Department within 28 days and requires the de- partment to publish a regis- ter of requests quarterly. 01.1111 ■ 11.11111.11!""^- I2 TEL-TWELVE SHOE REPAIR 28708 Telegraph Road 355-2467 Southfield, Mich. 48076 Open Mon. thru Sat. 10 A.M. to 9 P.M.
