According to the JCRB memo titled, "A Warning About the Integrated Hu- manities Program at the University of Kansas," which was sent as an alert to various Jewish commu- nities, "The Catalogue (ex- plaining the course) does not discuss the student trips to this monastery organized by the HIP faculty, or the 1976 student trip to a re- mote island in western Ire- land where instruction in Roman Catholicism, using a Roman Catholic cate- chism, was given." According to the JCRB, the program at the state school in Lawrence, Kan., is described by the cata- logue as a freshmen-soph- omore program "devoted to an introductory study of great philosophical, histori- cal and literary books of Western Civilization from Homer to Dostoyevski."' The program consists of four six-credit-hour courses taught by Professors Dennis Quinn, Franklyn Nel- ick, and John Senior. The memo adds: "While the IHP faculty deny they are 'brainwashing', it seems evident to many ob- servers that the great books are used to introduce young students to only one point of view, that of medieval Roman Catholicism...All published reports agree that contrary views are not aired in the IHP classes. "Memorization is stressed, but not dialogue and analysis. The Bible is read, but without scholarly methods of study. Students are not permitted to take notes in class or to ask ques- tions. They are told not to read even the footnotes and commentaries in the edi- tions of the books they use. They are warned against television, radio, news- papers, magazines and drama." According to Goldstein, students sometimes have lunch at professors' homes, which, he said, in and of it- self, would be a construe- five activity. But Goldstein alleged that an atmosphere encouraging conversion to Catholicism exists at the lunches. Furthermore, he said, stu- dents and professors some- times go to mass together, "presumably to help them in their Latin (ecclesiastic- al Latin, not classical)". And although the trip to Ire- land was "presumably a voluntary activity," Gold- stein asserted that there was "a lot of pressure to take it." According to Goldstein, about 300 students were in the IHP last year Wilson said"...at its height, 100 stu- dents out of 20,000 students at the school," were taking the course. An interfaith committee called "The Committee for Academic and Religious Freedom" has been formed, Goldstein said, with its primary goal being to inform potential students about the actual program. Evangelical Christians Plan Pro-Israel Jerusalem Congress JERUSALEM—To mark the 30th anniversary of Is- rael's statehood, evangeli- cal Christians will hold an "International Congress for the Peace of Jerusalem," in Israel's capital, Jan. 31- Feb. 2, 1978. Dr. Israel Carmona, steer- ing committee chairman, said the purpose of the con- gress is "to demonstrate Christian support for the na- tion of Israel and its right to exist under a just peace, to explore objectively Jew- ish-Christian relations throughout history so as to deepen awareness in the Christian church, and to present the biblical view of the role of Israel and the church in God's plan for the ages." The congress will be wel- comed officially by Jerusa- lem Mayor Teddy Kollek. Prominent Christians in Is- rael will be on the program and several Christian lead- ers of national and inter- national recognition will speak. Program organizers hope the congress will draw con- cerned Christians for Israel who want to show their sol- idarity with- the Jewish state in a positive way, thus various tours from the U.S. to Israel are being organiz ed for those who want to at tend the congress.
