42 Friday, July 8, 1977 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Technion Aerospace Laboratories Building Israel's Air Capability HAIFA—If the answer is blowing in the wind, as a popular songwriter said, then researchers are seek- ing it at the Baltimore Aero- space Building. It is now eight years since the American Tech- nion Society's Baltimore Chapter began its drive to help Israel achieve inde- pendence in the air" by con- structing an aerospace re- search center at the Tech- nion - Israel Institute . of Technology. During that time, Israel's aircraft in- dustry has become a force to be reckoned with in world aviation. The activi- ties in the laboratories con- structed with the help of Technion's friends in Balti- more have played no small part in that growth. The building is the home of Israel's main wind tun- nels. Technion researchers att, making innovative use of these wind tunnels in a varkiety of ways. Through combining the skills of sci- - Touch Up Your SUMMER ENTERTAINING With Music GAIL WHITE Soloist and Singer EVELYN TAMARY Pianist and Accompanist Weddings, Parties, Special Occasions CALL 546-0908 r entists' and engineers in 20 departments, Technion re- search haS-,helped in both the advancement of science and in building Israel. As Is- rael's only technological uni- versity with a Department of Aeronautical Engineer- ing, the Technion has made a large contribution to the development of Fsrael's air› craft industry. That growth has been phe- nomenal. On the country's 27th independence day, a proud nation watched as the government unveiled the Kfir, the fighter-bomber designed and built in Israel. Following the surprise French embargo of the de- livery of 50 paid-for Mirage IIIc jets after the Six Day War, it became clear that Israel would have to work towards producing its own sophisticated aircraft. De- fense experts wondered if it could be done. Engineers at Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), many of whom are Technion trained, said it could. And they set about to do it. Israel Aircraft Industries had gained experience ear- lier in the production of non-military craft. The first aircraft totally designed and built by IAI was the Arava, a short take-off and landing passenger and cargo transport. Production of the Arava was followed by the design and construc- To: The Jewish News 17515 W. 9 Mile Rd. The Technion's Depart- ment of Aeronautical Engi- neering assisted IAI in per- forming structural and wind tunnel tests, the latter in the Baltimore Building, for these aircraft. Today a Technion team, using the most advanced computerized methods, is continuing to work on im- provement of body design and wing shape. These ex- periments are run from a computer room on the build- ing's second floor. This fa- cility is a source of local pride - the computer itself is made in Israel, produced by the Elbit Corporation. There are two wind tun- nels housed in the Balti- more Aerospace Building. One is supersonic, produc- ing speeds higher than that of sound. The second is transonic, working at around the speed of sound. This tunnel, the only one of its kind, was deSigned by Technion staff members to meet the special demands of research here. A sophisticated appartus, it is called a "blow down" tunnel because of the way it operates. Air is added, blown down, into the tun- nel, enabling it to function for longer periods. This re- sults in conservation of energy, increasingly impor- tant today. and in more ex- periments-per-unit of corn- pressed air, a second sav- ing. The design and construc- tion of 'additional wind tun- nel facilities continue, as the Technion works towards improving the country's air- craft, and in other unre- lated areas that can make use of the special facilities of the laboratories that Bal- timore built. As example of the latter, researchers are using the tunnels to develop methods to protect orchards from heavy winds. Architects too are making use of the facil- ities in studies of building design. And in the future Baltimore's wind tunnels will be employed in pollu- tion studies. Name of Code Of Jewish Law By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.) "Shulkhan Arukh" is the term given to the code of law arranged by Joseph Karo in the 16th Century. The term means "a pre- . pared (or set) table." The term suggests that this code of law is a simple ar- rangement that can be used by the average man in de- termining the proper way of life according to Jewish law. The term is meant to dis- tinguish this code of law from Karo's more .sophis- ticated commentary on a previous Code of Law (Tur) which is referred to as "Beit Yosef." The latter was an involved discussion of laws while the Shulkhan Arukh was a comparatively simple arrangement of laws. U.S. Pays Its UNESCO Dues WASHINGTON (JTA)- The State Department has confirmed that the U.S. has paid its 1975-76 dues to the United Nations Education- al, Scientific and Cultural Organization, thereby en- ding a three-year impasse resulting from UNESCO's poliliticalization of itself in discriminatory actions against Israel. The payment of $43 mil- lion in back dues is about 20 percent of UNESCO's two-year budget.
