president Barbara Marcuse hold a plaque presented to the
Jewish Community Center in memory of Dorothy Karbel,
division president from 1957 to 1959, who died last year.
The plaque has been affixed to a bookshelf, donated by the
Women's Division Board of Directors, in the Center's chil-
dren's library.
The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit has received assur-
ances from Michigan Sena-
tors Robert P. Griffin and
Donald W. Riegle of their
full support for U.S. Senate
ratification of the Genocide
Convention.
Sen. Griffin stated "As a
member of the Foriegn Re-
lations Committee long con-
cerned with the protection
is pleased to announce
a new member
to our staff ...
of human rights, I fully sup-
port the Convention on the
Prevention and Punishment
of the Crime of Genocide. I
plan to vote for the treaty
in committee and on the
floor (of the Senate)—in-
cluding, if necessary, a
vote to end any filibuster
that might be mounted
against it."
Sen. Riegle explained "A
U.S. ratification, at this
time, would be a symbolic
declaration of conscience
against the crime of gen-
ocide and the atrocities of
the Nazi regime. If the U.S.
intends to continue as the
defender of world freedom
and human rights, I believe
it is vital that Congress
take swift action to ratify
the Genocide Convention
Treaty."
