Tisha b'Av, the ninth day
of the Hebrew month of Av,
July 24 this year, has been
observed as a day of mourn-
ing for nearly 2,000 years,
because it has been a day
marked by repeated major
tragedies in Jewish history.
In the Sixth Century
BCE, the Babylonians de-
stroyed the Temple of Solo-
mon in Jerusalem. The
Temple was rebuilt and
then destroyed, -more than
600 years later, in 70 AD,
by the Roman general
Titus. It was also on this
day in 1492, that the Jews
were expelled from Spain.
For information on pur-
chasing trees, call the JNF,

Surgeon's Feelings
on His Field Told
in New Volume

"Mortal Lessons," a new
publication by Simon and
Schuster gives the unaffi-
liated a new look at one as-
pect of the medical field—
surgery.
The book is a com-
passionate recapitulation
about the surgeon's routine,
mixed with the author's
knowledge of. his field, his
wit and sensitivity to his fel-
low mortals.
Subtitled, "Notes of the
Art of Surgery," the book is
written by Richard Selzer,
a general surgeon and a fac-
ulty member of the Yale
School of Medicine. He has
contributed to severa Ameri-
can magazines and has writ-
ten a collection of short sto-
ries entitled, "Rituals of
Surgery."

of the Oakland County Bar
Association.

for the Sabbath. Police said
that the driver, -Herzl At-
taya, was killed upon im-
pact at midnight Friday
and a friend in the jeep was
injured.
Police said that Attaya
did not see the chain be-
cause he was driving at ex-
cessive speed on the closed-
off road, Hashomer. But
the incident has exacer-
bated an already serious dis-
pute over the closing of the
road by the Municipality of
Bnei Brak.
The Ministry of Transpor-
tation has objected to the
municipality closing Hash-
omer Street in a religious
residential area because
the road is a major thor-
oughfare which goes
through religious and non-
religious areas.
Bnei Brak has appea
to the Supreme Court
Ministry's decision and two
weeks ago closed the road.
