New Story and Folktale Collection Delightful Anthology for Children
By ALLEN A. WARSEN
"Stories My Grandfather
Should Have Told Me"
(Bonim Books, an affiliate
of Hebrew University) is an
anthology of delightful and
versatile children's tales
edited by Deborah Brodie
and illuustrated by Carmela
Tal Baron.
The tales are divided into
five sections: "In a Little
Jewish Town; " "In the
Land of Israel; " "In Amer-
ica, the Golden Land; " "In
the State of Israel; " and
"In America Today."
The tale, "The Pair of
Shoes," by Aline Glasgow
centers around a pair of old
shoes that were shared by
the family's three children,
and were the cause of both
gladness and sorrow.
"Names for Sale" by Flor-
ence Slobodkin is a story of
a classroom where kindness
and unkindness competed.
Kindness, naturally, won.
"The Wedding" by Chaya
M. Burstein is a fascinating
story about a wedding in a
small town in Russia. It por-
trays the people participat-
ing in the celebration, and
describes the wedding cus-
toms and ceremonies.
In her story, "A Hebrew
Village," Devorah Omer de-
picts a visit by Eliezer Ben-
Yehudah, -the father of the
renaissance of the Hebrew
language, and son Ben-Zion
to Rishon-le-Zion where
they saw children playing
games. Suddenly, Ben-Zion
exclaimed : "Abba!" "They
are playing in Hebrew ! I
heard them call out to one
another: 'Let me have it!'

His father remarked:
"Here, in Rishon-le-Zion a
generation of Hebrew speak-
ing children is being raised.
One day all the children
and adults in this country
will speak only Hebrew."
"The Little Heroes of
Kfar Tabor," translated by
Azriel Eisenberg and Leah
Ain Globe, is a folktale
about little children who
saved their school from de-
molition by Turkish sol-
diers.
The school is still stand-
ing and is attended by the
great-grandchildren of
"those little heroes."
"Waiting for Mama" by
Henrietta Moskin is a
breathtaking story about
Russian Jewish immi-
grants, their arrival at Ellis
Island, working and living
conditions, getting adjusted
to the new country, and
helping bring mama and sis-
ter over to America.
"Ben Goes into Business"
by Marilyn Hirsh is a sim-
ilar story. But there are
some differences. Father
Isaac in the old country
"had been the greatest
scholar for miles around."
In the new country, he be-
came a pants presser
whom son Ben assisted fi-
nancially by selling suckers
at Coney Island and helping
a juggler perform on a tight-
rope.
"P'Idyon Ha-Ben" by Syd-
ney Taylor depicts the cere-
monies of "brit" and "pi-
dyon haben," and describes

The stories, "The House
in the Tree" by Molly Cone
and ."Miriam Lives in a Ki-
butz" by Cordelia Edward-
son, relates the experiences
of two newly arrived fami-
lies in Israel. Yaacov's
American family settled in
a city and Miriam's Moroc-
can family joined a kibutz.
Yaacov and Miriam, at
first, had difficulties getting
used to their new surround-
ings, but Sabra friends
helped them overcome the
difficulties.
"No, No Not Haman" by
Lilly S. Routenberg is a
story about a Purim
"seuda" (a festive meal)
and a Purim family play.
Since none of the children
wanted to be Haman, it
was decided to have a pan-
tomime with four-year-old
Noam to play the role of
the wicked man.
The suprise of the play,
however, was the unexpect-
ed appearance of a horse
on the improvised stage led
