The story is backgrounded against the events of 24 hours. "The Great Day," May 8,_ 1938 when Hitler, Goebbels and Hess trium- phantly arrived in Rome to cement a military and politi- cal alliance needed for the take-over of the European continent. Director Ettore Scola, with cinematic cunning, in- tegrates newsreel footage from Hitler's train trip to the Italian capital, the tu- multuous mass rally at the Piazza Venezia with the ec- static roar or 100,000 voices shouting "Ave" and "Il Duce" with a delicately framed love story involving Sophia Loren, wife of a Fas- cist bigshot (John Vernon) and mother of his six chil- dren in a one-time affair with a homosexual (Mar- cello Mastroianni) who mi- raculously captures virility for this 'special day" in their lives and the lives of the populace at large. "Gruppenbild mit Dame" (Group Portrait With Lady), the West German- French entry from the novel by Nobel Prize-win- ning Heinrich Boell, cuts • through to the center of the crimes committed under the Nazis and once more raises the question of collec- tive guilt still haunting the Germans today. Romy Schneider is a Ger- man woman infatuated with a' much younger Russian prisoner of war, portrayed by Brad Dourif who rose to recognition as the suicidal youth in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Ms. Schneider, recipient of the West German Film Prize, received the strongest ova- tions when appearing at the Festival Hall in Cannes after the screening of her latest picture, not only for her performance but also for becoming such • a staunch anti-Nazi shunning her homeland and living permanently in France. Joseph E. Levine's "A Bridge Too Far" emerges on the screen as a mass spectacle of war's futility, in its horror and gory de- tails perhaps the greatest argument for our endeavors to create an everlasting peace. Richard Attenborough dis- played extreme talent in staging the mass scenes which proved he has nor shunned his disgust of chau- vinism so ably projected in "Oh, What a Lovely War." But somehow, the all-star I D casting for "A Bridge Too Far" defies the realism of Cornelius Ryan's factual ac- count, while a similar ap- proach was fitting to his earlier, satirical World War I epic. Nonetheless, James Caan, Sean Connery, Anthony Hop- kins, Hardy _ Kruger, Lau- rence Olivier and Max- imilian Schell render believ- able performances, while Elliot Gould, Gene Hack- man and Robert Redford are wasted in cameo roles, and Ryan O'Neal is miscast as General Gavin. Walter Matthau teams again with Art Carney (his pa rtner in "The Odd Co uple" on Broadway) in the motion picture, "House Calls," co-starring with Glenda Jackson. It is a con- temporary comedy about a sexually naive widower who gets a second change at ro- mance. MON.. THRU FRI. rfF m .,,zavi DAILY HOURS: MON. THRU THURS., A.16Liorista.
