HENNY YOUNGMAN,
billed for umteen years as
"King of The One Liners,"
does a two-night engage-
ment, July 22 and 23, at
Royal Ascot on Southfield,
Lincoln Park...It's back in
the hands of ownerJack
Carrie, who always did a
good job promoting Royal
Ascot... Weekends before
Henny will be Frankie
Rapp, July 8-9...and Harry
Jarkey, July 15-16.
A NEW AND REVISED
edition of Meet, Eat and
Enjoy Detroit is being pre-
pared by the authors, Mary
Conway and Harry Satch:
well.
WHERE'S
GEORGE
FINK, you ask?...Still with
the suave, debonair ends-
pointed-upward mustache,
George is now manager of
the new Bagel Deli car-:,-
out (former Bagel 'n
Brunch Stop) on Maple,
just east of Farmington
Rd...George's tray catering
artistry from those days on
Dexter are still very much
a part of him.
NOSIRREE...Dave Wil-
born has not been forgot-
ten!...The only living mem-
ber of the original
McKinney's - Cotton Pick-
ers...and today still vocaliz-
ing as one of the New
McKinney's Cotton Pickers,
found this out but sure
while recently a patient at
Oakwood Hospital.
Dave received 175 get
well cards, plus flowers and
plants galore... and even
sang for the nurses, so
many of whom were thrill-
ed that Dave was • among
them..."The food was great
and the service terrific,"
says Dave, =who gave out
his recordings, and of
course. put on his famous
smile.
He's back home with wife
Isola and on the musical
path again...Besides singing
with the larger group, Dave
, has his own smaller contin-
gent made up of local jazz
goodies, called the "Little
Cotton Pickers"...They'll do
an outdoors bit, Sunday at
the huge Argyle Crescent
home of a Palmer Woods
devotee:..donated to thein
for the concert.
Sure Glad Dave is
back...He's one heck of a
swell guy!
THERE'S PLENTY of
recipes using wine...Like
the simple "Spritzer"...1/3
Rhine wine and 2/3 sel-
tzer...Pour chilled wine into
highball glass, add well-
chilled seltzer and stir light-
ly. .to more intricate ones
using various kinds of favor-
ite wines and cham-
pagnes...If you like the lat-
ter, try an American Beau-
ty Cocktail...1 ounce musca-
tel, 4 ouncies champagne,
thoroughly chilled and gar-
nished with a large
grape...or Arise My
Love...1 teaspoon creme de
menthe in a champagne
glass, then fill with cham-
pagne.
GET WELL IN a hurry
wishes...to Ann Conte, very
likeable bosslady of Rina's
Restaurant

fer...home
after
three
weeks in the hospital.
ACCORDING TO...Molly
Abraham in the Detroit
News... "Delicatessens are
the best place in the world
to have breakfast."
LOOKING
BACK...on
spots of yesteryears...
Supper clubs were always
phenomena almost entirely
restricted to New York
City...They did not flourish
with the same vigor else-
where.
Charlie
Costello,
the
amiable proprietor of the
restaurant bearing his
name, had been successful
in bringing a supper club to
Detroit...It wasn't easy.
A supper club can be dis-
tinguished by the follow-
ing...a small, luxurious
room with intimate atmos-
phere, open for dinner and
supper only—no lunches or
dancing; the patronage of
kiddies and pets is dis
couraged and it is a great
place to take mama, or, if
single, the girl friend on
special occasions.
Charlie
Costello was
primarily a music man
when he took over the old
Wedgewood Room, 1465 E.
Jefferson, in _September,
1949.
He admitted that what he
did not know about the res-
taurant and bar business
would have filled vol-
umes...It was this very igno-
rance of the field that gave
him the optimism to plunge•
into the business.
Charlie did have several
things working for him
when he took over control
of the Wedgewood
Room...He had a multitude
of friends, the most popular
dance combo in Detroit and
the polish and \personality
to make a fine host.
Charlie was boffi in New
York...He broke into the
music business at an early
age and was soon working
as a side man for Vincent
Lopez, Ben Bernie and
Meyer Davis...After that he
took over as accompanist
for such famed show biz
names as Helen Morgan
and Harry Richman.
Charlie came to Detroit
with his band in 1938 to sup-
ply dance music at Cliff
Bell's Commodore
Club...He liked the town so
much he came back to stay
in '41.
After playing his very
danceable brand of music
