Economist Friedman Will Get Hebrew U. Honorary Degree

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Prof.
Milton Friedman, the Nobel
Prize-winhing American
economist, is on a visit to
Israel during which he will

be awarded an honorary de-
gree by the Hebrew Univer-
sity.
Friedman, a conserva-
tive, has been proposed by
Likud as an economic advis-
er to the Israeli govern-
ment, but in a statement at
Ben-Gurion Airport he said
he did not have the neces-
sary data conditions in Is-
rael to suggest a solution
for its economic woes.
However, Friedman .
sought to clarify a major
point of controversy over
his economic theories,
namely that fighting in-
flation requires unemploy-
ment. He said he did not
favor unemployment, but

WE GOT YOU COVERED

that a certain reduction in.
the rate of employment is
usually a phenomenon that
accompanied anti-inflation
measures. He said he did
not know of any country in
which the fight against in-
flation did not entail a tem-
porary reduction of the em-
ployment rate.
In that connection he men-
tioned West Germany and
Japan which tackled in-
flationary problems in 1948:
He said the measures taken
in Chile after the military
junta overthrew the Allende
government were too ex-
treme, but the outcome was

that Chile's inflation rate
was reduced from 25 to five
percent per month.

Suggestions that Israel
would have to endure a
higher unemployment rate
to combat inflation were de-
nounced by Histadrut after
Finance Minister Simha
Ehrlich suggested following
Likud's election victory in
May, that Friedman should
be invited to advise theliew
government. Tuesday Ilista-
drut released a statement
challenging the economic
concepts on which Fried-
man based his ideas.

Jews for Jesus Sue Church

American Jewish Com-
mittee, said that as recent-
ly as 1973, "more than 90
local councils of churches
throughout the country in-
volving Roman Catholics,
Protestants and evangelical
leaders, including Dr. Billy
Graham, forthrightly re-
jected such efforts to target
the Jewish community, and
especially Jewish young
people, as objects for their
soul-snatching."

Moishe Rosen, director of
the Hineni Ministries, said
the Council letter had been
reported in various media
and that it "reflects poorly
on the actions of ourgroup,
which are anything but dis-
honest."
Rev. Jack Alford, - execu-
tive director of the 600-
member Council, said the
Jews for Jesus lawsuit
"proves the point" of the
Council letter. 'He said the
Jews for Jesus "would like
to deny us our rights pro-
tected under freedom of
speech and freedom of reli-
gion." He said the outlook
of the Jews for Jesus group
was the kind "spawned in
some fascist and commun-
ist countries."
Tanenbaum said that the
Long Island Council
"stands on absolutely firm
ground in charging Jews
for Jesus, the Bnai Yeshua
and other so-called Hebrew-
Christian movements with
subterfuge."
He said he could demon-
strate "to any fair-minded
person abundant evidence
that Jews for Jesus and the
allied Hebrew-Christian
groups have consistently en-
gaged in fraud, deception
and the morally offensive
actions of manipulating -and
trivializing Jewish sacred
articles as well as Jewish
religious beliefs."
Alford said his organiza-
tion stands by the letter
which led to the lawsuit.
The letter was *sent last Feb-
ruary to the 600-member
churches and to the 200
Long Island synagogues.
