Jewish tradition re-
quires everyone to wash
his hands upon arising in
the morning.
At least four reasons
are advanced in different
parts of rabbinic litera-
ture. One is based upon
the mystical concept that
some sort of evil spirit
overs over a person
hile he is asleep at
night. (Shabbos 109a).
This has sometimes
been interpreted to mean
that when the human
being is asleep his posi-
tive qualities are inac-
tive. The process of going
from a state of sleep to a
state of being awake is
going from inactivity,
which is comparatively
negative in character, to
a state of active existence
which is comparatively
positive in character.
Washing one's hands
cleanses him from the
negative state and
readies him to assume the
positive.
Rabbi Solomon Ibn
Adereth (Rashba, Re-
sponsa 191) claims that the
individual is required to
wash his hands in the
morning because he is to
consider himself like the
priest in the temple of old
who had to wash his hands
before doing the holy sac-
rifical duties in the
sanctuary.
Life is the sanctuary of
man and awakening from
one's sleep is like enter-
ing the sanctuary of life.
The activities there (in
the sanctuary of life) con-
stitute sacrificial acts to
the Almighty. Rising to a
higher and more exalted
degree of holiness thus
requires washing of the
hands.
Zohar (Bereshith 12:3)
explains the requirement
of washing the hands in
the morning by indicat-
ing that sleep is a minia-
ture form of death while
awakening is a return to
life. Those who have come
into contact with death
are required to wash
their hands for spiritual
renewal, because water is
the medium of both a new
born life and creation.
Rabenu Asher (The
Rosh-Berakoth 60) exp-
lains the requirement to
wash one's hands in the
morning on the grounds
that during sleep hands
ay touch various parts
f the body or objects that
are possibly unclean
spiritually since man was
unable to guard and con-
trol them. This obviouMy
indicates that the
wakened state of man re-
quires control and
guarded behavior, while
the state of sleep removes
man's control over him-
- self. Passing"from an un-
'controlled passive state
to an active state of regu-
lated life thus requires
washing of the hands.
