THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 8 Friday, July 1, 1977 National Jewish': An International Acronym nirisonsnsnies, By Jewish News Special Correspondent RESORT DENVER — "National Jewish" is the term of refer- ence by which a , great health and curing center has become world famous. The name could well be equated by another term, "Internationally Non- sectarian," and it would at- test with proper emphasis to achievements that have given fame to this city and its Jewish community. National Jewish Hospital and Research Center, the great Jewish-sponsored in- stitution which is always briefly referred to as "Na- tional Jewish" because of its popularity, has ad 80- year-old, interesting history and it developed into -a nonsectarian institution be- cause of what had occured in Denver in the latter two decades of the last century. People streamed into the community hoping for cures from tuberculosis. They suffered and the pan- acea they searched for was not available. That's when the then Jewish spiritual leader, Rabbi William Friedman, undertooj to form a center to provide re- lief. There were struggles and it was not until the very end of the century that the hospital at last became a reality. Now there may not be a SOUTH HAVEN, MICHIGAN ACRES OF FUN! Detroit is an example. It was outlined at the dinner, under the chair- manship of Robert M. Sur- dam, attended by more than 900 supporters of the hospital. Former Congress- woman Martha Griffiths was the honoree. The at- tendance was over- whelmingly non-Jewish. Again, it was attesting to the nonsectarian character of the institution honored and generously provided for. The Detroit role bears em- phasis, even if a portion is in the retelling. There are presently three patients from Detroit, two are 65 and one is 32, who are treated for asthma, and a woman, 42, who is suffering from tuberculosis. Since the founding of the hospital in 1899, 342 from Michigan have benefited from the NJH services. They received more than 101,000 days of patient care. The aid was provided re- gardless of race, age or ability to pay. From Detroit alone, 160 patients were given more than 56,000 days of care. Not only Detroit, but other Michigan patients have been cared for. NJH has cared for chronic res- piratory patients from 72 cities in Michigan. Of special interest is that 51 Michigan physicians, nurses and technologists have completed the NJH postgraduate course in clini- cal management and -con- trol of tuberculosis. A physician at the Wayne County Health Center serv- ed a two-year fellowship at NJ-H - where he received postgraduate training in the hospital's TB and Chest Sec- tion. Dr. W. Paul Reagan, for- mer director of the Respira- tory Disease Control Pro- gram for the Wayne County Department of Health, attri- butes a reduction in pro- gram cost from $10,847,000 in 1969 to $4,600,000 in 1972 as a direct result of assist- ance from NJH. In 1968 Dr. Thomas Moulding was loaned to the Wayne County Department of Health at no charge by NJH to establish a tubercu- losis control clinic. Sub- sequently, two physicians from the Wayne County De- partment of Health attend- ed NJH training programs, returning to Detroit to put into effect specific pro- grams in tuberculosis con- trol developed by the staff of the National Jewish Hos- `U.S.-Israel Co-Production Blocked for Security Reasons' WASHINGTON (JTA)-L The White House acknowl- edged that the Pentagon blocked co-production of a radio communications sys- tem for military use by American and Israeli com- panies, but it declared it was for "security reasons" and not an action directed against the government of Israel. Requests from West Ger- many and France to join in the production of the sys- tem, Presidential Press Sec- retary Jody Powell said, also were turned down for the same reason. - He pointed out they do not have a "memorandum of understanding" with the United States regarding co- development and co-produc- tion of items within a cer- tain "highly classified" range of items. When the Jewish Tele- graphic Agency, which ques- tioned Powell on the sub- ject, observed that the Pen- tagon apparently does not trust Israel's security, the Press Secretary said the request for the joint produc- tion was not from the gov- ernment of Israel' but from the Sylvania Electronics System group. This company is engaged in a project with an Israeli company, Tadiran Israel Electronics Industries, Ltd. Sylvania is a subsidiary of General Telephone and Electronics which also is said to be part owner of the Israeli concern. Emphasizing that "the al- legations and insinuations" that the Pentagon acted against Israel are "totally untrue," Powell said that "we already have co-pro- duction" agreements with Israel on parts for the F-15 warplane, and that the U.S. is considering co-production for additional elements for the F-15 as well as for the F-16 fighter, a hydrofoil, and the Israeli "Chariot" tank. Meanwhile, a report that President Carter has ap- proved selling to Israel $115 million in new arms was welcomed by Premier Men- ahem Begin. Carter's decision was re- vealed in a story in The New York Times Sunday and reported widely in Is- raeli newspapers. Accord- ing to the Times story from Washington, Administration "sources" said that Carter will propose that Israel be sold 200 wire-guided anti- tank missiles, 700 M-13 ar- mored personnel carriers and 15 M-728 tank bull- dozers. (In Washington, The New York Times story was not confirmed by the White House.) In a related development, Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance said that the United States will provide to Israel "the arms which are neces- sary for its self-defense." Colleges to Close for High Holidays NEW YORK (JTA)—A policy under which all units of the State University of New York will be closed on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, effective this fall, has been adopted by the SUNY trustees, a spokes- man for Governor Hugh Carey reported. The decision ended a dis- pute at the Buffalo campus, which had planned to hold classes on the High Holi- days.
