With the exception of his

for Romania Jews New Spectrometer

TEL AVIV (JTA )—Yosef
Almogi, chairman of the-
Jewish Agency- and World
Zionist Organization Execu-
tives, returned from a visit
to Romania and said he had
high hopes that some 50,000
Romanian Jews would be al-
lowed to be reunited with
their families in Israel.
Almogi said that Jews
were treated well in Ro-
mania, but almost every
Jew had a relative in Israel
and the majority Of. Roma-
nian Jews wanted to make
aliya. However, he noted
that the number of exit per-
mits is not as high as Jews
would like.

JERUSALEM—A spec-
trometer, the most ad-
vanced of its kind, devel-
oped and built at the Hebr-
ew- University of Jerusa-
lem, has recently been.
installed in the large ther
monuclear device of the Eu-
ropean Center for Ther-
monuclear Research, in
Paris.
The work was done in the
Laboratory for X-ray and
Far Ultra-Violet Spectrosco-
py in the Racah Institute of
Physics at the Hebrew Uni-
versity.
A spectrometer is an in-
strument that -absorbs radi-
ation emitted from atoms,
as a result of electronic
transitions, and records the
radiation in lines arranged
by wave length. Maximum
precision in this recording
is vital in thermonuclear re-
search, one of the areas
being explored today for
new ways of creating
energy.
Scientists hope that even-
tually, perhaps in a few dec-
ades, they will succeed in
developing methods en-
abling mankind to use ther-
monuclear energy, as the
main source of power.

Canadian Zionists
Will Support Begin

That position was adopted
in the -form of a resolution
approved by some 100 dele-
gates at the close of a two-
day meeting of the national
executive of the Canadian
Zionist Federation in To-
ronto.
The resolution added that
"we shall continue to put
forth every effort to assist
the state in its attempts to
achieve a just and lasting
peace with its neighbors
based on justice, equity and
honor. We call upon all
Jews and citizens of good-
will to join us in this great
and 'noble task."

62 per cent of the rabbis
were in favor of according
women equal rights with
men on aliyot, whereas
only 37 per cent of the con-
gregations actually called
women to the Torah on an
equal basis with men.
Regarding the counting - of
women as members of a
minyan, 56 per cent of the
responding rabbis favored
such a procedure whereas
