Suspenseful, Socially Valuable Mara Rostov's Troica' Novel
The how is the story of
Mara Rostov's novel
"Eroica," a G.P. Putnam's
Sons-published volume of in-
trigue, suspense, adventure
and romance.
Replete with the above
and enough of a touch of
mystery to keep the reader
hanging in there, "Eroica"
will fascinate,-Imaze, fright-
en and pique the reader's in-
terest to such a degree that
he will find it difficult to
put the book down.
The story tells of Eroica

nowned, German, ex-Nazi
industrialist, whom Eroica
surmises is planning to re-
activate the murderous Hit-
ler organization. When her
mother loses her will to live
and dies, and brother Gerd
commits suicide with his fa-
ther's war medal clutched
tightly in his hand, Eroica
is almost positive of her the-
ory. She is not entirely
wrong.
After a chance meeting
with a Jewish travel writer,
Jans Deblin, the son of con-
centration camp victims
and a survivor of the
camps himself, Eroica is
led on a path to avenge her
father's hateful past. How-
ever, Jans' "black book"
on the horrors of the
Holocaust strikes a bad
note in her mind and the
poor girl goes insane.
Recovering from her 1 1/2-
year-long hospital stay, she
is primed to take over her
father's position, since her
brother, the logical heir to
,ihe von Heyditch fortune is
deceased. With new found
power, she rearranges the
household and becomes the
"apple of her father's eye,"
despite the fact that she
has hate in her heart.
When the household turns
to chaos, following the news
that her father will be in-
dicted for his World War II
crimes, she is partly fear-
ful, but remains the most
calm of the servants, who
occupy the household with
her and her father.
When Jans, who has since
become her lover, • dis-
appears she presumes foul

Mara Rostov's "Eroica"
is a novel important for its
social implication, that one
should always be watchful
of the resurgence of Naz-
ism, especially in light of
the recent decision in-
volving Skokie, Ill., and the
American Nazi Party pa-
rade allowed to take place
there, but also for its enter-
tainment valve. It provides
a reader with an exciting
tale that may not be as far
from reality as one would
think.
