Among Jews, keyn eyn-
oreh ("no evil eye") is a
magical phrase uttered to:
(a) ward off the evil eye;
(b) protect, a child or loved
one; (c) show that one's
praises are
not con-
taminated by envy. Jews
have a long tradition of
scorn for the vainglorious.

Southfield Housing
Compromise OKd

State and Southfield offi-
cials have agreed on a com-
promise plan to build 183
high-rise apartments for re-
tirees and 93 single-family
homes for low and moder-
ate income groups.
Under the original plan,
which has stirred a recall
campaign against members
of the Southfield City Coun-
cil, all of the units would
have been built as part of
the high-rise complex.
The compromise calls for
the subsidized housing to be
scattered throughout the
city. City officials expect
the projects to take 18
months to two years to com-
plete.

When a fool does some-
thing wrong, he blames
others; the seeker of wis-
dom who does wrong
blames himself; but the
wise man blames neither
himself nor others, for he is
pious.
