• • THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ADL Asks Removal of Judge LOS ANGELES (JTA)— The Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith has asked for the removal of a recently appointed judge, claiming his objectivity is tainted by his religious be- liefs. In a letter to the commis- sion, the ADL said Fresno Municipal Court Judge Hugh Goodwin was critical of the First Amendment which safeguards the sepa- ration of church and state. According to the ADL, Goodwin has said : "Any re- lition or form of govern- ment that is not based on Jesus Christ and the belief that only through Christ can one obtain personal sal- vation is doomed to destruc- tion." Joshua Kheel, the ADL's Pacific Southwest regional president, said in the let- ter: "A comment such as this...would be sufficient to arouse - concern about the manner in which a member of the bench would treat those who come before him whose religion he perceives as, not one of 'equal valid- ity' and, therefore, 'doomed to destruction."' Kheel added: "It has been reported to us that the judge has conditioned pro- bation and avoidance of jail for a guilty defendant on mandatory church attend- ance." 500 Honor Major 1977 Contributors to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Israel Some 500 persons attend- ed the annual dinner of the Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital Wednesday evening in support of the new Jerusalem medical fa- cility which will open next year. Shapiro: LZA Backs Israel Has Right to Criticize It Too NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Judah J. Shapiro, president of the Labor Zionist Al- liance, declared that "we will support Israel political- ly, morally and financially, but at the same time we re- serve the right to say that we are unhappy with some of the expressions of the Is- raeli government." He referred specifically to the possible agreement between a Likud-led govern- ment and the Agudat Israel faction on religious issues which would "impose the tyranny of the 15 percent Orthodox over the 85 per- cent non-Orthodox Jews in Israel." Dr. Shapiro addressed 600 Labor Zionists at a birthday tribute to him at the New York Hilton Hotel spon- sored jointly by the LZA and the National Com- mittee for Labor. Israel which Shapiro also heads. Shapiro described the re- cent election results in Is- rael as "not a. victory for Likud" but "a Labor de- feat." He noted that "Likud did not get a majority of the votes and can reign only through a coalition. The paradox is that the Labor. Alignment was sup- ported by the white collar and middle class elements, while Likud, a right-wing party, gained the support of the poor people and blue col- lar workers. Maybe there Was something wrong with Labor Zionism in Israel," Shapiro said. -- Atlanta Braves Owner Turner Apologizes for Joke About Jew NEW YORK—Ted Turn- er, owner of the Atlanta Brves and Hawks, has apologized to the Bnai Brith Anti-Defamation League for his seemingly anti-Semitic remarks about a Jewish player's agent. Turner, in remarks made at an awards breakfast of the National Sportscasters and Sporthwriters Associ- ation in North Carolina, said of the agent, "I'll tell you the way (Jerry) Kap- stein conducts his business and the reason I don't like him. After all, you should have some reason to dislike a guy besides the fact that he wears a full-length fur coat and is a Jew." Turner also said he had written a letter to the agent and signed it, "Yours in Christ." In a letter to ADL's re- gional office in Atlanta, Turner said he realized "anti-Semitism is no joking matter" and that he deeply regretted having made the statement, even though he had intended it to be fce- tious. "I hope you'll accept my apology," he added. "The flippant comment does not represent my convictions in any way, shape or form."
